Rattlers coach Shell arrested for snorting cocaine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 31, 2005

MESA, Arizona (Ticker) - Arizona Rattlers coach Todd Shell was arrested Tuesday morning following an apparent binge with cocaine, police said.

Shell, 43, was spotted at 12:40 a.m. local time by an officer doing a routine check behind a commercial complex.

"He said he owned the business, then changed his story to say he stopped behind the store to do cocaine," Mesa Police Detective Tim Gaffney told SportsTicker.

Wearing shorts and sandals, Shell was found to be in possession of about an eighth of an ounce of white powder and a straw. The substance was taken to a crime laboratory for analysis. After authorities receive the results, Shell could face drug charges.

Shell was taken into custody on an arrest warrant for a probation violation in nearby Gilbert. He was charged with DUI in 2003.

A member of two Super Bowl-winning teams with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s, Shell replaced former NFL quarterback Danny White as Rattlers coach and went 7-9 in his first season in 2005.

A former linebacker at Brigham Young, Shell was the 2003 Arena Coach of the Year while with the New York Dragons. He also previously coached the San Jose SaberCats.
