“Better than finding a bucket of gold” is how Denny Asher describes his discovery of a record-breaking 75-pound stony meteorite. He found the visitor from outer space near his home in Yucca two weeks ago.

The experts may agree with him. Lora Bleacher of Arizona State University confirmed that Asher's find is significant and will probably find its way into the record books.

“From the pictures I've seen, it appears to be the largest stony meteorite found in Arizona to date,” Bleacher said.

“Earth's oldest rocks are about 3.5 billion years old. Meteorites have been around longer - about 4.5 billion years,” she said. The asteroids from which most meteorites originated were formed when our solar system was created.

Precisely where that neighborhood is located remains a secret. Just as an angler is tight-lipped about his favorite fishing hole, Asher was reluctant to specify exactly where he found the meteorite. And perhaps for good reason.

The rare stone is worth a minimum of $35,000.

I've got one I found right here at work in the grass. I'd say about a week or so after a meteor shower we had some years back I was walking thru the grass and stepped on something. It was this rock well imbedded into the ground so I kept it and used it as a paperweight....for its size its very heavy. One day a customer was sitting at my desk and noticed it and asked where I got it....."found it" I said, "Think its a meteorite". Well she was a geologist or something like that and goes on to tell me that her Thesis was on Meteorites and verified that this 'rock' truely is a meteorite. Verified by her expertise. :D
It is a cool conversation piece on my desk because for whatever reason people tend to just pick it up if their sitting there, then I see the look on their face because of its weight to size ratio. With a puzzled look they say, "What is this thing?".
Duh, its a meteorite :laugh
