Warm air temperatures tempt ‘polar bears' into 54º water
By Shelly Zeller Saturday, January 7, 2006 8:45 PM MST Are you a polar bear or just a chicken?
Members of the Polar Bear Club asked that question as dozens of people took part in the 36th annual Polar Bear Run event at London Bridge Beach Saturday afternoon.
“We've had as many as 90 people in the past take part in the event,†said organizer Stephanie Faller. “Last year it was really cold, windy and ugly, so not as many people showed up. This year we had another great turnout.â€
More than 50 people took part in the swimming/skiing event, with participants ranging from a 5-month-old infant to a pair of 73-year-olds. About 38 skiers and wake boarders, five tubers and nine swimmers took part in the chilly event. Although the air temperature rose to about 74 in the afternoon sunshine, the lake stayed at a mere 54 degrees. Â
“Whatever can be done in the water, as far as skiing, tubing and swimming, can be done throughout the day today. Everyone gets a patch for participating in the event,†said Faller.
Chickens earned a patch for just a small dip in the lake. Â
“Chickens are the ones who don't water ski or even swim,†said Faller. “They can earn a patch by just sticking a foot, or even a toe in the cold water during the afternoon.†Â
Greg Williams, who is a Lake Havasu City resident and is on his 11th year of water-skiing during the event, said he started participating because of a bet. “My friend and I bet each other that we couldn't do it, and now we've done it every year since,†he said. “This is the only time I water ski all year, so I really look forward to it.â€
On his second year of bearing the 54-degree water temperature, Clint Darrow said it really doesn't feel quite that cold. “It really feels like it's 60.   I usually water ski in the summer as well and I plan on taking part in this event next year,†Darrow said, as he was able to stay up on one ski during his run.
Annalesha Fain, 9, defeated Lake Havasu's cold waters and went for a ride behind the boat in a tube after her mom told her about the annual event.
“I had a lot of fun and it was only the second time I was on a tube. Next year I'm going to try to get up on skis,†Annalesha said.
She admitted, though, “I feel like I'm in an ice cube.â€
Maybe next year.....
