Very Sad, one of the guys here in my office was on his way into work when the crash happened, he took some photos of the scene, as soon as he e-mails them to me I will try and get them posted.

Here is the story so far from the local NBC station...

[bCARLSBAD, Calif. -- A plane crashed near McClellan-Palomar Airport Tuesday, killing all three people on board, NBC 7/39 reported.

The crash happened at about 6:40 a.m. as a Cessna 560 twin-engine jet was trying to land on the airport's runway, NBC 7/39 reported. The plane, which can hold up to six passengers, was coming from Hailey, Idaho, a town near the Sun Valley ski resort.

Flaming wreckage of the plane was scattered by a storage facility located about 100 yards past the end of a runway at the airport. The plane plowed through a wooden platform at the end of the runway and down a slope before slamming into the building. It was not clear whether the plane was taking off or landing.

Helicopter video showed smoke and flames coming from the crash site. Only the tail section of the plane appeared to be intact.

Fire crews extinguished the fire with foam and water. There was no sign that anyone on the plane survived.

The airport 30 miles north of San Diego serves private planes, business jets and two commuter airlines, America West Express and United Express, both of which operate turboprops out of the facility.

I fly into that airport (professionally) a great deal.(110 landings in "large aircraft" last year)  It is a short runway for a jet, and for years we have seen lots of skid marks at the sharp end of that runway... To make matters worse it was built on a landfill, and now it sits in a bowl, with the middle many feet lower than the ends. We have always thought it was just a matter of time.....

"There but for the grace of God go we"

Godspeed to all those and their families involved.......

Oh yes, the wonderfull media...

Some guy saw the airplane fly over his house on it's approach and it still had the landing gear up.  Didn't say how far from the airport he lives, just that he lived under the "approach path".  :rolleyes

They just built about 1,000 homes less then a mile away, however the flight path isn't directly over them. We actually see a lot of aircraft do sort of a touch and go if you will without their landing gear down, they're usually 150 feet (guessing) off the runway before they pull out and come back in for the real landing.

I've heard so amny different reports I'm having a hard time telling which is true, or lovely media spins it to make a very bad situation even worse. It is too bad that it happened, hopefully after the investigation we will know the truth...

Fragile Magic, do you fly for one of the commuter Airlines that fly in and out of Palomar?

Yup, We fly the Dash 8 Turboprop for America West Express. Its a great airplane, and with at least 10 knots of headwind and landing weights under 33,000 pounds, we can make the first turnoff...But there have been nights with bad weather, rain soaked runway, heavy as we can be, windy and gusty as all get out and we roll all the way to the end!

When I flew the Citation into Palomar, it was straight forward, but if you are unfamiliar with the airport it will wake you up in a hurry!!

Our blood would run cold occasionally when we would see skid marks at the departure end of 24.....never had the courage to ask the controller what happened.

We all silently thought it was just a matter of time.....

The airport is safe, but the runway is only like 4800 ft or so, and if you are not right on profile and speed it can get interesting on roll out...

Still one of my favorite airports and towns anywhere we fly.

I have a good friend that operated Lears out of there for alot of years.  First in a 25, then later a 35.

I talked to him last night, he almost saw this same thing happen years ago.  The culprit that time was the pilot not wanting to fly the pattern to Runway 6.  He didn't like to taxi back to the FBO.  Made a straight in off the ILS to 24... with a tail wind.  He didn't touch down till the bottom of the hump and had to climb on the brakes for all the were worth.  Didn't prang the airplane, but came close.  Don said that guy never landed there with a tailwind again.

Investigators on Wednesday recovered the cockpit voice recorder of a business jet that crashed and burst into flames near McClellan-Palomar Airport, killing all four people aboard, officials said.

The victims included Frank H. Jellinek Jr., 60, of Rye, N.H., chairman emeritus of Fisher Scientific International, a Hampton, N.H., company that provides products and services for labs and clinics. He was flying into San Diego County to attend Fisher Scientific business meetings, a company spokeswoman said.

The Cessna 560 Citation crashed early Tuesday after a flight from Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey, Idaho, near the Sun Valley ski resort.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference at the accident site that the cockpit voice recorder appeared to be in good shape.

It could take federal investigators up to six months to sort through evidence, including crew radio transmissions.

An NTSB official said the plane’s landing gear was down as the pilots attempted to land the twin-engine plane.

The aircraft went about 150 yards beyond the runway, barreled through a scaffolding holding airfield equipment and rammed into a commercial storage facility.
