LOS ANGELES -- Emergency crews are at the scene of a crash involving an airplane and helicopter, according to the El Cajon Fire Department.

The mid-air crash occurred near Gillespie Field in La Mesa.

At least one ground structure in on fire.

NBC 7/39, NBC's affiliate station in San Diego, reported that a black column of smoke was visible from the debris of at least one of the aircraft. Witnesses told the station they saw the two aircraft collide.

Rescue workers are working to put out a fire just south of Interstate 8 and east of Grossmont High School.

Very sad for those involved, thank goodness no one on the ground was hurt or injured, a bad accident could have been even worse. Godspeed to the pilots and passenger....
