We have a new park by the house and Maynard took off down the ajoining river with some other kids while I was daydreaming.

I yelled for him to come back to the park.

He asked "why?"
My answer was: " Because I said so."

Is that as good a reason as any when dealing with the kids?

No, he's a smart kid, give him a reason, put it in his terms so it makes sense. he will be more willing to remember why.

I think it's a good tool for est. authority with kids that are challenging authority or just flat out disrespectful. I think it's one thing to give a brief reason why, out of consideration and another to have to explain yourself to the point of defending your position with a child. I think bantering back and forth with kids happens too much in our society today.

I don't believe they need an explanation for everything, but I try to give one most of the time.  You always have a reason for your actions, why not tell them (unless they are teenagers and argumentative)?  He's too young to go to the park without an adult.  He's old enough to understand that.

Because I said so works for me up to a certain age. Real young ones won't really understand our rational so any explanation is kinda useless.
Another tactic I have used is real simple. Just say " I need to be able to see you".......then locate yourself accordingly.

Well, "Because I said so" is where it's at with me and my kids.  They don't ask me for an explanation nor do they try to change my mind...because they know they won't.

Now the Mrs on the other hand, she will give the kids an answer to something and if it's not what they want to hear, they will just keep begging and asking why/why not until she gives in (Which she usually does).

For some reason the kids don't come to me anymore when they want something :D  :rotflmao  :rotflmao

That was always our rule until she got old enough to understand, then we'd explain but if we got a rash of shit about it, then it was back to "because I said so", only a little bit harsher, and it worked!.. :laugh

Don't ya just love it when they get to that "I know it all" age!.. :D  :laugh

I'll usually give a brief explaination and then I am done. Strangely enough my situation is just like yours  :D
