From Hotboat this morning:
Sgt. Gene Stuckenschneider and his 16 year old nephew Eddie were on their way back from the Colorado River traveling west bound on Rice Road at the Ironwood cutoff in Palm Desert. Gene’s boat trailer had a tire blow out. Gene pulled off to the side of the road and was going to change the flat tire. The shoulder was too soft and the boat trailer became stuck in the sand.
Officer Eric Anderson, who was driving in his own truck ahead of Gene, saw Gene pulled over on the shoulder. Eric turned his truck around and drove back to Gene and told Gene that he would tow him out of the sand. Gene and Eddie got out of the truck and stood by the flat tire on the trailer.
As Eric waited for traffic to pass an elderly male driver not paying attention drove into the back of Gene’s trailer and truck which pushed the vehicle towards Gene and Eddie who were standing off the side of the road. The vehicles struck Gene sending him at least 50’ in the air and killing his nephew Eddie. Eric turned around and came up to the accident and started to give first aid to Gene. Eric was able to get a hold of the CHP which had a 45-minute response time. Gene was transported to a local airport by ground ambulance and then flown by air to Las Vegas University Medical Center. A short time later, Gene passed away at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Thoughts and prayers that everyone is ok. |
One of the main roads going to Parker, put a lot of miles on that road back in the 80's!..

With all the carnage that seems to take place along Rice Road  , you'd think the State would spend a few bucks to make it safer...

It could be a 10 lane highway and it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference with all the going on out there, I put a lot of miles on that road and I've had few close calls because of some of those assholes, guess I was lucky and God was looking over the kids!..

That sucks......My thoughts and prayers go out to the families.
This is one of the reasons why I don't take Rice road and instead I take Parker/Post.

We're really sorry to read about this sad incident. We always stop at wrecks and lend assistance. We have a huge first aid bag.
As other motorists / groups stop and come up to lend assistance at wrecks our first impression is how drunk the other drivers and their groups are. We're talking shitfaced. Their slurred speach, their breath ,, a real eye opener as to how dangerous the other drivers on the road with you can be.
We have come across a San Berdo Sheriffs DUI checkpoint on Rice. The LEOS told us we were the exception because we were sober. They were hauling off a bussload of drunks.
From decades of stopping and helping I can give some advise: Try to call in the wreck from the road side emergency call phones if possible, it gives the dispatchers a more accurate location. All the drunks calling in on the cellphones giving the wrong location really does slow down a response.
Consider Eherenberg RD. Not sure if the Engines have a better or faster system of emergency response (couldn't be any slower perhaps), but it seems fewer accidents there.
Response and getting the injured out on an accident on Rice rd can easily be 2 hrs or more, most always is, this ops just from my experience.
When we come upon Engines that have wrecked, their group doesnt wait for any help, they haul the injured/dead off to the reservation hospital no matter what. Boatcop link: http://disc.server.com/Indices/163246.html
