An F-16 crashed and burned today in a field near Loop 303 and Indian School Road, about two miles southwest of Luke Air Force Base Tuesday morning.

Luke officials said the pilot ejected safely but was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The jet, which was assigned to the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke, was on a training mission when it crashed shortly after take off just before 10 a.m. The plane reportedly was not carrying any live ordinace.

Former State Rep. Joe Hart said he saw the plane as it plummeted from the sky, crashing in a field in a ball of fire. Hart also said he saw the pilot parachute from the plane.

Another eyewitness said the plane missed homes surrounding the field by about half a mile.

"It was like a little mini-nuclear explosion," said witness Robert Roman.

Luke Air Force base is located in Glendale, west of Phoenix.

LMFAO!!
That would be a crazy site to actually see the plane come down like that. Glad the pilot made it out.

We've had this problem for years. It is probably the thrust augmentor in the aft part of the engine on the Block 50's series vipers.  They send the Block 50's back for training so the higher block series jets go operational to the sandbox.

The problem (if this is indeed the problem) can be fixed for about 50K per plane. Unfortunately, USAF is willing to sacrifice a 20 million dollar tool of warfare to preserve a 50K thrust augmentor.........don't get me started!!.............................................. :plane
