So my computer crashes on friday to the point that I can't restore it. The blue screen message that I get, everybody says its the blue screen of death. Since I'm not a computer whiz and I need to buy a new computer.....what should I look for in buying a new desktop, which is the best brands etc... Any help is greatly appreciated....... Oh.....and I don't want to spend more than $600 on a new tower.

The BSoD isn't necessarily the end of life for your computer. It could just be that your system files have become corrupt and you need to reinstall your OS and programs.
I am looking at a Dell mag that shows a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz, 256 RAM ( I would upgrade that to 512) 80 Gig drive, 48x CD-RW /DVD Player, and a 19" Flat Screen for 479. Add on 140 Bucks and you get 1 Gig memory and a 16x DVD-RW drive AND 2 Yr Next Business Day on site warrenty. Thats a good warrenty.

What operating system...??? Sounds like 98 or 2000.
Try to run CHKDSK /F from a DOS prompt. Might help to correct any cross-linked files.
If you can get into Windows after that, run the Disk Defrag; prob. will take a few HOURS....
Dump your Internet Cache and Defrag again..... Should run it once a month, IMO....

Yup...I have a windows xp 2000 version. I'll try the chkdsk dealio and see what happens.
Does anyone know if the HP 1310 with 2.2 processing speed, 1G memory and 200G hard drive is any good?
Will that be good for downloading music and pics?

Everyone has an opinion about Dell. I have used them almost exclusively where I work and they have always been great machines.
They do come with a lot of software installed but 20 minutes in the Add/Remove Programs list will solve that.

My personal preference is Dell or Gateway. Good solid performers. The Sony VAIO is a little pricey, but a great graphics based machine. I've always heard that HP/Compaq are problematic, and use proprietary(sp?) memory chips and other, sometimes, sub-standard parts.
1G ram minimum, 256k G-Force graphics card, fastest processor you can get (2.2 is fine), 200G is a good size HD; maybe get two(2), a smaller one for your system software, and a bigger one for your data, music & picture files.
You can always get a fire-wire external HD later on, if more data storage is needed, plus it's "portable" between machines.

It would probably be easier for me to build the Eifel Tower than trying to build a computer. I know my talents and building a computer is the last thing I would try to do. Besides its easier to send it back to a store rather than doing this

Store bought puters are junk, you need to build you're own if you want a good one!. But no matter what you buy or build, to keep it running tops it should be cleaned out at least once a year, even scandisk and defrag aren't a 100%!.. Should have a second hard drive too, sure makes it simple to keep stuff backed up, I put them in all mine!..

Yep, you probably could have saved a bunch, probably nothing wrong with the one you have!... If you have XP("Pro" I hope)turn on the firewall, for virus shit "AVG" is hard to beat and it works in the background, you hardly know it's there!.. For spyware "Ad-Aware" and "Spybot" works great, also Yahoo has a real good one with their toolbar, I use it all the time!...
