Alice set our first and only house rule and said the "D" word is not an option, never to be spoken in our home or lives ever.(Divorce).

When I was a kid, my parents were ancient fossils and the word "Dink" was considered obscene.
It meant your wiener, and that was a bad word too.

"Who wants to kick RD in the Dink?",,, Nah doesn't work anymore.

Also if ya said : "That's swell", swell was considered profanity, and you were in big trouble. Swell meant a girls coinslot or her "swell".

Damfino how they made those connections, but I was convinced your parents could kill ya if they felt like it and I stuck with the rules.

What words were banned from your home?

I don't remember any when I was a kid.  Other than curse words, of course.

My kids aren't allowed to say "shut-up, stupid, idiot (unless they are quoting Napoleon), fat or ugly". Neither are my students.

Regarding the "D" word.  Good for her. We don't say that either. The more you say it, even joking, the more it is viewed as an option.

When I was a kid, the most impressionable thing I ever saw and heard on TV was MLK saying to reporters: "I don't Hate anyone".
That tattoo'd in my p sized brain for life.

When I was a kid, we couldn't even say "butt" in our house.  We had to say "bottom". :)  For the Christmas gift exchange with our family friends, one of the other children requested a George Carlin album.  My mom bought it not knowing the content.  So here we are, both families together to celebrate  Christmas, and the kid puts the album on for all of us to listen to.  He went right into the 7 words you can't say on TV.  Needless to say, my mom was very embarrassed. :rotflmao

In my house I'm not allowed to use the words fat, drunk, exercise, or budget, unless I'm talking to my son. ;)

I wouldn't say we have particular words we've banned but more along the lines of simple respectful language is to be used around the home.
Divorce I don't think has ever been mentioned in our 16 yrs of marraige....but we promised to be honest to each other if we did have an issue...............
So instead of asking for a divorce I asked she put the cap back on the toothpaste tube  ;)  :laugh  and I put the toilet seat down  :good
.
.
.
As far as when I was a kid at home, most of the time we spoke german around the house so nobody else knew if I said po-po(ass/butt). Again, more of knowing what was respectful or not.
