Boating Safety Now High Priority
TRI-STATE - As Memorial Day approaches, boating season kicks into high gear.

In Arizona alone, there are nearly 150,000 boats registered. Drinking is also in abundance and boating safety is more critical than ever. For those who are interested, the 2006 Tri-State Boating Safety Fair will be held at Lake Havasu State Park tomorrow from 8:00am to noon. Boaters and safety experts from California, Arizona and Nevada will be on hand for food, games, free boat safety checks, water rescue demonstrations, a life jacket trade-in and much more. It should be informative and fun. The key safety factor remains using a life jacket. Nationwide, about 70% of those who die in boating accidents drown, and 86% of them weren't wearing a life jacket.

Meanwhile, there’s another kind of reminder. Besides regular law enforcement, the Arizona Game and Fish Department schedules operating under the influence (OUI) checkpoints at various times throughout the boating season. The department also uses high saturation or "wolf pack" patrols, where officers patrol high use areas, looking for impaired boat operators on our waterways.

Please be careful out there my friends.... :good

Just a stupid tradegy.... :(

SEATTLE - A 44-year-old mortgage broker has been charged with homicide by watercraft almost a year after a boating accident killed his daughter's friend.

Charles Fraser Hall, of Seattle, was piloting a 20-foot speedboat off Magnuson Park late last July 19 when it collided head-on with an 18-foot Bayliner. Hall's boat was traveling at about 20 mph and its running lights weren't working, while the Bayliner was traveling about 5 mph, King County prosecutors wrote in charging papers filed Thursday.

Hall's daughter and her friend, 13-year-old Jessica Elizabeth Benson, were sitting on the bow, and the crash threw Benson backwards through the windshield. She suffered fatal brain and neck lacerations. Also on board was Hall's 6-year-old son, who sustained a broken jaw.

Bruce Goettel, who was driving the Bayliner, broke his kneecap, and his wife, Donna, was thrown into the water and suffered a back injury.

Prosecutors wrote that the previous day, some boaters had complained that Hall had been driving too quickly near fallen water skiers, and that he appeared to have intentionally run over a buoy, destroying it.

Hall is not in custody. He is to be arraigned May 18 and faces 21 to 27 months in prison if convicted. His attorney, Richard Hansen, could not immediately be reached for comment after business hours Thursday.

I'm sure you guys can guess how I feel about DUI/OUI.  The only accident I've ever had was when I was hit head-on by a drunk driver.  Today I spent my day off at the funeral of a Gilbert PD Motor Officer that was killed the other day on his police motorcycle going to work a DUI task force.  The other driver is said to have been drunk at the time and has a history of the same. :guns

Not to mention one of my friends/coworker/riding buddies lost a leg about two years ago to a drunk off-duty Scottsdale cop who fled the scene of the accident.

Remember to wear your PFD's....

Willie Cobb said he appreciates the efforts of a teenage boy and girl who rescued him and a friend Saturday morning after a boating accident on Hatch Pond in South Kent.
Mr. Cobb, 60, was fishing with Jesse Cox, 75, and a third friend, John Crews, 66, on the pond when their boat capsized.
Mr. Cobb and Mr. Cox were taken to New Milford Hospital and treated for hypothermia. Mr. Crews died. “All I know is that I was pulling the fish. Never got it into the boat. And the next thing I knew, I was in the water.”

“We don’t know what happened,” Mr. Cobb said from his hospital room Monday. “All I know is that I was pulling the fish. Never got it into the boat. And the next thing I knew, I was in the water.”
Fortunately for the men, Joey Kyek and his girlfriend, Samantha Adler, both 17 and from Brookfield, were on the pond fishing that day. Mr. Kyek is an EMT and a firefighter with the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Joey and Samantha’s boat was some 50 feet from the other boat when it capsized. The teens immediately made their way to the capsized boat after hearing the splash. Both were small aluminum fishing crafts.
As they headed to the accident, Joey saw Mr. Crews doing a “dog paddle in place, just keeping his head above water.” Mr. Cobb and Mr. Cox were holding onto the boat.

“We yelled to them,” Joey said, “and at first they said they were all right. I cut the line to their anchor so we could right the boat and get them in. Then Willie said, ‘Just help us. We can’t swim.’Ÿ”
Joey got into the water, grabbed Mr. Cox by the coat, pulled his grip from the boat, and started to swim to shore with him. “Where’s the third guy?,” Joey asked as he pulled at Mr. Cox.
“I remember one of them saying, ‘He made it to shore.’ And I thought that must be the guy in the red coat,” Joey said about a man he’d seen earlier.
Joey estimates the water in the pond was “no warmer than 55 degrees.”

Because the men’s fishing lines had become tangled in the teens’ boat motor, Samantha was paddling the boat toward shore and pulling the other craft, to which Willie Cobb was still clinging.
Two other fishermen, in a bass boat owned by James Ellis, headed toward her to help.

“Willie was pointing toward the shore, then his finger dropped toward the water. He said, ‘There’s my friend,’Ÿ” Samantha recalled.
“I was confused and said, ‘Where?’ One man on the bass boat looked around and said, ‘Oh, my God, does he have a red jacket on?”
“Joey and I said `yes’ and he said, ‘Oh, man, he’s right there” and pointed under the water’s surface.

Joey dove to the bottom, pulled Mr. Crews up on the bass boat with the help of the two bass fishermen, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Mr. Crews had been underwater five to 10 minutes, Joey estimated. The teen was able to get Mr. Crews to spit up water, but ultimately the rescue was too late.

The bass fishermen had called 911, and a rescue crew from the Kent Volunteer Fire Department was quickly on the scene.
Mr. Crews was transported by LifeStar helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, where he was pronounced dead.
“I can still see John (Crews) swimming,” Joey said. “We tried our best. We just have to remember that without our help, all of them could have been lost.”

The State Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the accident.

Focus on boating safety this season

PHOENIX — Spring heat is setting in, and that means many Arizonans will be heading to the water to cool off. As boating season arrives, the Arizona Game and Fish Department wants to remind you to stay safe, especially because Arizona has six of the 20 most dangerous waterways in the United States.

“National Safe Boating Week will be celebrated from May 20-26, but boating safety is really important every day,” says Arizona’s Boating Law Administrator Kevin Bergersen. “You should always be sure to take the precautions that will help keep your boating trip safe and fun.”

Among the things you should do before heading out on a lake or river:

1. Make sure enough life jackets are on board the boat for everyone, make sure they’re all the right size, Coast Guard-approved and in good working order, free from holes.

2. Check that your boat’s motor and propulsion system are working right.  Put drain plugs back after winter storage.

3. Know the passenger and weight limits for your boat, so you can avoid overloading it.

4. Make sure your fire extinguishers work.

5. Don’t ever drink and drive a boat.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department schedules operating under the influence (OUI) checkpoints at various times throughout boating season. The department also uses high saturation or “wolf pack” patrols, where officers patrol high use areas, looking for impaired boat operators on our waterways.

“We want everyone to enjoy their time on the water in a responsible way,” says Bergersen. “By following the tips above, folks can have a great time, and needless tragedies can hopefully be avoided.

The U.S. Coast Guard estimates more than 400 lives could have been saved nationwide in 2003 if all boaters had worn life jackets. "In 2004, 12 people lost their lives in Arizona, six of who could possibly still be alive today if they had worn life jackets. Also, alcohol was a contributing factor in about one-third of all reported recreational boating deaths. We want to educate everyone about the things they can do to protect themselves and their families,” says Bergersen.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department recommends taking a boating education class. Statistics show knowledgeable boaters are safe boaters. Those interested in taking a Game and Fish boating safety class can call (602) 789-3235 or visit azgfd.gov/boating for more information.

Get more details at BoatColoradoRiver.com

You can also attend several safe boating events co-sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department this season:

A Safe Boating Day event will be held at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Hemenway Harbor on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will have the chance to win some prizes, including a family houseboat vacation and a 2006 Sea-Doo personal watercraft. Boat safety inspections and training are among the other activities planned for this event.

National Safe Boating Week also kicks off with the 3rd Annual Arizona Safe Boating Celebration at Lake Pleasant on Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will include free boat safety checks, life jacket displays and information, and a speech by state Rep. Colette Rosati.

Another tragic loss of life...boating at night... :(

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two men died and a third was seriously hurt when a boat struck two docks on the Ortega River late Sunday night, police said.

Just after 11 p.m., homeowners along Lake Shore Boulevard called 911 to report a boat had crashed in the river. When police arrived, two were already dead. The third occupant of the boat was airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

According to the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Charles Streat, 26, of Jacksonville, and Cory Christy, 28, from Virginia, were killed in the crash. Christy's father, Brett, from Maryland, remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Investigators said the 19-foot boat, operated by Streat, was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it struck and went under one dock, then slammed into a second.

The homeowners said they were alerted by a loud crash and came out to investigate. They didn't immediately see the wreckage, but heard the boat's motor still running.

Even though it happened at night, officers said they could see easily see the docks when they arrived at the scene.

"From what we've seen, everything's well-lit out there. There's some nice, good moonlight and some bright lights out in the back," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Kevin Hensley said. "I'm not sure what caused them not to see and why they struck the docks."

Just another example of the tragic loss of human life due to stupidity.....[u]

COOS BAY, Ore. -- Three people aboard a 17-foot motor boat died Tuesday when it capsized after getting hit by two waves, authorities said.

The victims, two men and a woman, were not immediately identified.

The boat capsized near the south jetty of Coos Bay, said U.S Coast Guard Petty Officer Kurt Fredrickson of Seattle. The Coast Guard verified that the three victims were the only people aboard the boat and called off the search for others.

Mick Sneddon, chief of the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District, told The Coos Bay World that a witness reported the boat was struck by two waves after turning south from the jetty. He said the witness told authorities the second wave capsized the boat.

The boat was a model typically used for recreational ocean fishing, said Lt. Justin Denton, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman at North Bend.

Winds were 20 knot winds out of the north and ocean swells were 2 to 4 feet long -- everyday conditions for the sea, Denton told the newspaper.

Fredrickson said none of the victims was wearing a life jacket.

Martin Callery, spokesman for the Port of Coos Bay, said the boat's operators had purchased moorage Friday and added an extra day on Monday.

In March, a Coos Bay man died after water filled his small boat after he entered a section of rapids on the Umpqua River without engine power. And in January, a maritime pilot died trying leave a freighter he'd guided over the Columbia River bar and out to sea in stormy weather.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters that life jackets greatly increase the chance of survival during a maritime accident.

Sixty-four percent of people who died in 2005 in Northwest boating accidents were not wearing life jackets and eight out of nine people who drowned in Washington state boating accidents last year were not wearing a life jacket.

Girl Drowns At Telephone Cove
LAKE MOHAVE, AZ – Tragedy struck a family at Lake Mohave yesterday afternoon. At around 4:45pm on the Arizona side of Lake Mohave, the National Park Service reports that one of their rangers was on foot patrol at the south end of Telephone Cove. Two adults ran up to the ranger and reported that their 4-year-old daughter had fallen into the water while playing on a raft. She wasn’t wearing a life jacket and had been missing for approximately 15 minutes.

The girl was found by an NPS boat patrol at around 5:15pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Bullhead City Fire Department paramedics, her name is being withheld pending a coroner’s report. A wind advisory was in effect at the time of the incident. It is the 4th drowning fatality at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area this year.

Although I cringe at the thought of a young life lost because of such stupidity on the part of the parents, I have to say thanks for posting these stories Shue...

It helps me overcome the mixed feelings I get when I have to literally scream at my girls about life vests. Everyone "Knows they aren't cool" to wear when you are around your friends....

I don't give a rats ass about what the other kids think or do.

How old are they?? :stupid  I know that there is a law about having to wear a life preserver until a certain age, that escapes me right now but I think it's 13.....

Teen Dies In River Accident

NEEDLES, CA - A 17-year old unidentified girl died on the north section of the Colorado River yesterday. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Tim Smith said, "The teen was riding a personal water craft when a boat struck it."
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. No further information about the accident or the victim's identity is available at this time.

This one is very close to home.  She's goes to our local HS and was quite popular around campus.  Everyone wore red on Tuesday and there are signs on the freeway overpass.

She was traveling north on the river near an area called Circle Beach (don't know it) and turned right.  The boat was traveling north, between her and the shore, or so it sounds for the posts over on HB.  It happened around 5pm Sunday.

From what I can gather, so far, it was a LOW SPEED collision between her PWC and the boat, an accident, pure and simple.  She died instantly, according to local information.  I'm sure more will come out on exactly what happened.

When you have so many people, cars and watercraft congested together on big week-ends, accidents are going to happen; itls un-avoidable.  Your putting yourself and your family at risk by participating.  This is EXACTLY why we stay away from crowds on holiday week-ends.  Just so very sad... :(
