Parrotheads Invade The Avi
LAUGHLIN, NV – Parrotheads, unite! Today and tomorrow marks the "3rd Annual Phins to the West,†a major parrothead regional regional gathering at the Avi Hotel and Casino. The event promises to brings together more than 600 Jimmy Buffett fans, known as “Parrotheadsâ€, who represent 23 clubs in 18 states and Canada at this year’s event.
The public is also invited both tonight and tomorrow at 7:00pm for a "Parrothead Party" at the newly completed $31-million lagoon and pool expansion at the Avi. Admission is $20, where there will be drink specials and live Buffett tunes until 2:00am. Organizer and 20-year-parrothead Jim Hill told TSN all of the proceeds go to two good causes.
“We have two charities we’re representing this year,†Hill said. “One is the local Laughlin Boys and Girls Clubs and we also give to our national charity, which is the Children’s National Cancer Research Society.â€
But what’s the connection between charity and being a fan of Buffet’s music?
“Jimmy Buffett is into charity – one of his main charities is the ‘Save the Manatee’ out of Florida,†Hill explained. “When we started all the parrothead clubs in all the different states and cities, we just carried that philosophy on – frolicking in his music and lifestyle and carrying on his philosophies – we call it partying for a purpose.â€
And the parrotheads' purpose this year is to top the $10,000 mark set in 2005. Hill said, “we’re expecting to do more this year because of the quality of the items donated for the silent auction and the quality of our raffle bags."
