My neighbor is a retired pitcher with the St Louis Cardinals.
I think he and I are the only people left in the neighborhood that still mow our own lawns, and trim our roses.

He says "It's theraputic".
I still work in the garden because I get ancie just sitting in the sun,, so I like gardening because I'm doing something outdoors while drinking beer,, and it's cool to look at the good job ya just did.

But:

My not too old lawn mower finally died.

It pissed me off when I went to the Little Tokyo Lawnmower shop. Mr Akahoshi told me Buggs And Strap-on no longer makes the pop rivited POS "complete starter unit" I needed to repair my mower.
A search on the net proved he was being honest with me.

The mower wasn't all that old,, and I took good care of it.

What was cool was Alice went to her storage unit,, and got out her unused Honda Harmony Lawnmower,, and brought it home. She loves gardening too.
It's one of those $700 models, really nice. Maybe built to last.
I'm sure I'll be able to get any part for it in the future.

The whole not-lasting-to-long part reminded me of when a group of friends and I started a movement to save the Mission Beach Giant Dipper Roller Coaster in San Diego.

At the start of restoration, we opened the train barn,, and the original coaster car/trains were within.

We pushed them out on the tracks backwards up the last drop and went for a drunken ride in the dark.

I later located by shear dumb luck, the project Foreman that built the coaster 75 years earlier for the Prior and Church Safety Roller Coaster Company.

Among other things, I mentioned to him the cars were still intact,, and believed to be the originals.
He later confirmed they were,, and said: " Back then, things were built to last".

Is anything built to last anymore? Ya got any stories?

I still use the Sensation mower that I mowed my parents lawn with 35 years ago.  Its on its 3rd engine and fourth set of tires, try finding someone that replaces tires on a lawnmower, but the aluminum deck and handle are still in great shape.  I only use it twice a year to scalp the lawn for winter grass, the rest of the time I use a rechargeable electric.  It's kinda fun because it brings back memories of the money I made mowing my neighbors lawns in the summertime as a kid.

Sensation built the best mower by far!! The co. sold a couple of times , then disappeared. If you still need tires for it let me know.....

Trimmer built a great Machine as well. The only thing that was better was Pro-Master, which is now out of business too, unfortunatly....

It's all metal. It still works just fine. :good

I enjoy working on old cars/trucks that were actually built to last. I have a 1938 Chevy PU that has spent the biggest part of it's life in a field collecting everything from bird droppings to rust but it can be restored, soon I hope :good it frustrates me to buy new products that I know will not last me my lifetime :banghead

Surprisingly the mower shop I go to still has tires to put on.  Its kind of cool to see, they have to heat up the tire to stretch it around the wheel.

Surprisingly it works like it was brand new, but it has that fabric wrapped cord so I never walk away while it's plugged in.
