I have a Nevada Vehicle Code question.  Is it legal to tow in the #1 lane (far left) of a 5 lane in each direction highway?  In California, it is not.  When towing, you are limited to the right 2 lanes.

This is why I ask.  When coming home from work today, traffic slowed in the #1 lane because a guy with Nevada plates was towing a 35+' Weekend Warrior in that lane.  Immediately in front of him was a 40' motorhome towing a Hummer.  :beat Those vehicles had Nevada plates as well.

Thanks Ross. :)

Even if it was legal, it seems like it would be common courtesy to not drive there. :beat

Actually Doug, there are no lane restrictions in Nevada unless specifically posted. I drive my big truck in the #1 lane through Vegas all the time during rush hour because it's the only lane that moves.

There is an impeding traffic law and here it is directly from Nevada DMV's website;

NRS 484.373  Duties of driver driving motor vehicle at speed so slow as to impede forward movement of traffic; prohibition against stopping vehicle on roadway so as to impede or block normal and reasonable movement of traffic; exception.
1.  If any driver drives a motor vehicle at a speed so slow as to impede the forward movement of traffic proceeding immediately behind him, the driver shall:

     (a) If the highway has one lane for traveling in each direction and the width of the paved portion permits, drive to the extreme right side of the highway and, if applicable, comply with the provisions of NRS 484.374;

     (b) If the highway has two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic traveling in his direction, drive in the extreme right-hand lane except when necessary to pass other slowly moving vehicles; or

     © If the highway is a controlled-access highway, use alternate routes whenever possible.

     2.  A person shall not bring a vehicle to a complete stop upon a roadway so as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the stop is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

In AZ, you can even tow in the carpool lane as long as there are at least 2 people in the tow vehicle.....

I've been told by a few CHP officers that in CA you can tow in the carpool lane provided there are 2 ore more people in the vehicle.

Thanks for the info Bob. :good  I was just trying to figure out what those drivers were thinking. :stupid  BTW, neither of them were passing anyone.  They were the slowest traffic on the road.  The peeps in all other 4 lanes were traveling faster than they were. :beat

I read that before I replied, I understood it different,,,, I now see your point.
I was thinking 55 mph towing, slower traffic to the right posted as in Cali.

I even know a guy that got a ticket on the Eastbound 60 in Moreno Valley (2 lanes in each direction) for towing in the left lane. :eek

My understanding of California law is:

  • Towing is limited to use of right 2 lanes ONLY on 3 or more lane highway.

  • When there's only 2 lanes, the left lane can only be used for passing.  After that, you have to merge back to the right lane.

  • There's "impeding traffic" laws, but that applies to everyone, whether towing or not.

  • I knew that was the law.  Was only quoting what was told by a local CHP officer.   Seems odd that might be legal to tow in the carpool lane when you have to break a few laws to get over there.

    It now sounds tempting to go in the carpool lane or fast lane when towing..............But, I think I'll stick to the far right lanes like I usually do.

    You just never know when that 1 dickhead cop is gonna pull you over just to f#*k with you and driving in those lanes will give him a reason to pull you over.  :D

    After I got my ticket for crossing the double-double yellow lines of the carpool lane I read every law pertaining to carpool lane violations looking for a loophole.....there aren't any BTW.

    But the rule on towing in CA in the carpool lane in the DMV handbook is:
    Vehicles towing trailers are typically not allowed to use carpool lanes because they must drive more slowly and are usually restricted to the right-hand lane.

    Yesterday I was towing and I had to pass two dog-slow motorhomes occupying the #2+3 lanes in a duel to see who was the slowest :banghead  The one in the far right wouldn't let the other guy pass and get back to the right lane in front of him.

    I had to kick it up a notch and pass them quickly and slide back over to the right. I think last weekend is one of the biggest for RV's on the road. :rolleyes

    Thats one of those pet-peaves for me Doug.... I knew the laws yet one time I got ticketed for moving to the far left lane of a 3 lane road to avoid an accident.......something cause by the cop himself. He'd just finished writing a ticket on the side ofthe road and just began pulling back out into the freeway traffic, everyone freaks and hammers on the brakes, my rig wasn't gonna stop in time so I jumped into the left lane and then right back to where I was. Thats what he saw. So I get the ticket for being in that lane all of 5 or 10 seconds :angry  :angry .
    So whenever I see(and I see them all the time) someone driving for miles and miles illegally it really chaps my hide :guns  :guns ...I even had some dickwad towing over 90mph passing me on the 15 heading towards Vegas thru Apple Valley.....wtf??

    CHP really has a hard-on for not staying in the right lane, emergency or not. :stupid

    I got stopped for exactly the same type situation. CHP car pulled out from the shoulder, people went nuts slamming on brakes, I move over to avoid rear ending someone and he pulls me over. :angry

    He's already copping an attitude and we :fight for a while. He's gonna write me a ticket and I won't have anything to do with his bullshit, so he threatens me :beat with jail.

    I insisted he get his watch sergeant to come out and HE could right me a ticket.

    In the end, the sergeant did come out and at first he had attitude, but after I explained what happened and mentioned I don't like being called a dumbass truck driver by his officer, the sergeant apologized and sent me on my merry way. :good

    As I drove off, the sergeant was pointing his finger in the officer's face and speaking VERY firmly. :D

    Bingo...exactly how it went for me except I had my wife and kid with me...fricken cop even had the nerve to wake up my son in the back seat sleeping peacefully.... :angry
    My distain stems from the fact thousands of others get away with it for hundreds of miles and I got popped for 10 seconds :rolleyes ...I did it and paid my dues :bowdown . Just really frustrating for me....LOL it even bugs the shit out of my wife too.  :laugh
