Actually Doug, there are no lane restrictions in Nevada unless specifically posted. I drive my big truck in the #1 lane through Vegas all the time during rush hour because it's the only lane that moves.
There is an impeding traffic law and here it is directly from Nevada DMV's website;
NRS 484.373 Â Duties of driver driving motor vehicle at speed so slow as to impede forward movement of traffic; prohibition against stopping vehicle on roadway so as to impede or block normal and reasonable movement of traffic; exception. 1. Â If any driver drives a motor vehicle at a speed so slow as to impede the forward movement of traffic proceeding immediately behind him, the driver shall:
   (a) If the highway has one lane for traveling in each direction and the width of the paved portion permits, drive to the extreme right side of the highway and, if applicable, comply with the provisions of NRS 484.374;
   (b) If the highway has two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic traveling in his direction, drive in the extreme right-hand lane except when necessary to pass other slowly moving vehicles; or
   © If the highway is a controlled-access highway, use alternate routes whenever possible.
   2.  A person shall not bring a vehicle to a complete stop upon a roadway so as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the stop is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

I've been told by a few CHP officers that in CA you can tow in the carpool lane provided there are 2 ore more people in the vehicle.

| Quote (Havasu Doug @ May 29 2006,9:16 pm) | I even know a guy that got a ticket on the Eastbound 60 in Moreno Valley (2 lanes in each direction) for towing in the left lane.
My understanding of California law is:
Towing is limited to use of right 2 lanes ONLY on 3 or more lane highway.
When there's only 2 lanes, the left lane can only be used for passing. Â After that, you have to merge back to the right lane.
There's "impeding traffic" laws, but that applies to everyone, whether towing or not. |
I knew that was the law. Was only quoting what was told by a local CHP officer. Seems odd that might be legal to tow in the carpool lane when you have to break a few laws to get over there.

| Quote (Havasu Doug @ May 29 2006,5:38 pm) | Thanks for the info Bob. Â I was just trying to figure out what those drivers were thinking. Â BTW, neither of them were passing anyone. Â They were the slowest traffic on the road. Â The peeps in all other 4 lanes were traveling faster than they were. |
Even though it's legal to drive in that lane, those guys could have gotten a ticket if they were the slowest ones out there!..

I used to go thru there like that with a wide load to get to state line before dark on a Fri so I could come in on Sat morning. A couple of times the cops saw me never stopped me though, guess they knew what I was doing!.

It now sounds tempting to go in the carpool lane or fast lane when towing..............But, I think I'll stick to the far right lanes like I usually do.
You just never know when that 1 dickhead cop is gonna pull you over just to f#*k with you and driving in those lanes will give him a reason to pull you over.

| Quote (Ziggy @ May 30 2006,2:14 pm) | Thats one of those pet-peaves for me Doug.... I knew the laws yet one time I got ticketed for moving to the far left lane of a 3 lane road to avoid an accident.......something cause by the cop himself. He'd just finished writing a ticket on the side ofthe road and just began pulling back out into the freeway traffic, everyone freaks and hammers on the brakes, my rig wasn't gonna stop in time so I jumped into the left lane and then right back to where I was. Thats what he saw. So I get the ticket for being in that lane all of 5 or 10 seconds  . So whenever I see(and I see them all the time) someone driving for miles and miles illegally it really chaps my hide  ...I even had some dickwad towing over 90mph passing me on the 15 heading towards Vegas thru Apple Valley.....wtf?? |
CHP really has a hard-on for not staying in the right lane, emergency or not.
I got stopped for exactly the same type situation. CHP car pulled out from the shoulder, people went nuts slamming on brakes, I move over to avoid rear ending someone and he pulls me over.
He's already copping an attitude and we for a while. He's gonna write me a ticket and I won't have anything to do with his bullshit, so he threatens me with jail.
I insisted he get his watch sergeant to come out and HE could right me a ticket.
In the end, the sergeant did come out and at first he had attitude, but after I explained what happened and mentioned I don't like being called a dumbass truck driver by his officer, the sergeant apologized and sent me on my merry way.
As I drove off, the sergeant was pointing his finger in the officer's face and speaking VERY firmly.

No shit, I remember one time heading out to Salt Lake with a 15' wide load(two escorts), we were on the 60 out by Pomona and here is an 18 wheeler dead on the shoulder, so we move over to pass and bingo a motor cop comes flying up on us got on the CB and started reading me the riot act, so I yelled back and asked him wtf am I supposed to do stop right there and wait till that 18 wheeler got going again, bastard just ignored me and kept on rattling on for about a mile before he took off, good way to start off a trip huh!..

You always could've just slammed that wide load into the truck on the shoulder. That cop would STILL be writing a report.
What a tool.
