Her leg was amputated at the hospital just below the knee. She had some pretty bad lacerations, and quite a few of them because, due to the design and structure of pontoon boats, the boat did not just pass over her, she became entrapped at the motor.
I can't tell you how many people I stop every day for bow/transom/gunnel riding and try to explain how dangerous it is. You might as well just stick you hand in the garbage disposal. They just don't get it. We were just having fun, nothing's gonna happen to me. Oh, and while most people think I'm just picking on them when I arrest them for OUI, and it's just innocent fun, and why don't I go catch the REAL criminals and the jet skiers? Without getting into it, the #1 (Ok, really the only factor) that caused that tragedy Saturday? and not just the victim.
A sincere "thank you" from the Sheriff's Office to those taking the time to render assistance. Just the early notification to the Sheriff's Office so we could have an air ambulance there a little sooner may have saved her life. As you may or may not know, the Sheriff's Office has volunteer EMT's and a contract paramedic on each squad on the weekends, not to mention that most of the deputies working the lakes are also EMTs, all of which routinely see and treat this kind of trauma. The faster anyone can get to someone in that kind of situation the better, and seconds sometimes count. You and all your group deserve a big pat on the back.
Please be careful out there folks. It's gotten too routine for me dealing with this kind of thing because I've done it so long and so many times, but I don't want you guys to have to see it or experience it. Use the common sense your momma gave you and don't make me give you a refresher course.

Latest update...
As of this morning, her condition actually improved. Her leg was removed below the knee, and they did what they could to sew up her chest. The biggest risk now is infection. That many severe lacerations that are that deep have a high risk. She was taken off of our "life threatening" list, but the hospital still has her listed as critical.
AzMandella,
Again I want to extend my thanks, and the thanks of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for the actions you took. In a trauma situation like this, seconds count and often save lives. As I said before, just alerting the deputies and medics on the lake gave us a head start on treatment and arranging for air transport. I also want to add this, any trauma that your daughter may have been exposed to should be overshadowed by the learning experience she's had, seeing you and your friends coming to the aid of a total stranger, and playing a big role in saving her life. Talk to her in a positive way about the incident. Use the experience to HER advantage as a teaching tool to make her not only a better person who is willing to come to the aid of others in need, but a safer boater as well.
Thanks again to all of your group,
Deputy Jeff Hanson #1306 Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lake Patrol Division

Wow, I've been kinda MIA from the board for a few days and missed this thread. This is sad to hear. I am glad knowing that there are people out there that will stop and render aid when needed. Its tough to hear sometimes but a reminder every now and then can keep you thinking when its time to be responsible.
