More companies ban cell phones at work
Those jingling ring tones are the No. 1 pet peeve for many office workers, newspaper says.
June 20, 2006: 12:50 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The use of cell phones at work is being limited by many companies as more workers object to the noisy beeps and ring tones from personal calls at work, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

USA Today reported that 30 percent of employees cited cell phones ringing at work as their No. 1 pet peeve at the office.

The report, quoting a survey by Ranstad USA, a staffing company, and the Society for Human Resource Management, said that more than a third of companies contacted have put in place policies to address the issue.

The biggest reason for the limits include the noise and distraction, the newspaper said. Many workers have complained that some people seem to require surgical removal of cell phones in order to put them down.

More than half of workers surveyed said they get impatient or angry when a coworker stops a conversation because of an incoming wireless call, according to a Sprint survey cited in the article.

An employment lawyer in Dallas, Audrey Mross, was quoted as saying that more employers are expected to ban or limit cell phones as more workers get fancier models with the ability to take pictures or watch video clips, which could hurt productivity.

Lack of productivity and annoyance aren't the only reasons for a cell phone ban, according to the article. Safety is also a factor. In the article, Mross explained that employers may be liable in an accident even if an employee is using his or her own phone and doing business outside normal working hours.

Meanwhile, there's also been a move to ban cell phones in New York City public schools, Reuters reported. The news agency said Detroit and Philadelphia have barred cell phones from schools, while Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and Las Vegas allow them in the schools but prohibit their use during classes.

I say its ok to have your cell on at work.  Its a direct line to you from your kids or family.  Its not reasonable to expect an 11 year old to memorize all your contact info or have family in other states remember more than one number for you.

But according to the issues in the article, its not ok.  I expect my coworkers to turn off the ringer for one.  And they should only talk long enough to say they will call back on their break.

I don't even think Miller can take his cell phone into the office building at all  :eek I know they aren't allowed to use cell phones, there's big sign at the entry stating that...along side a sign that says your cell phone will be configated (sp?) if you do have one!  :eek

Cell phones at work are a double edged blade for me...

Since we have radio contact with the crews, I would literally spend half my time relaying messages to the crews from their wives/gf/kids... it was beyond annoying.  We literally made a few people get a cell phone.  Of course, now we get calls asking "Could you get ahold of John on the radio??  I tried his cell phone but he doesn't answer".  Gee, you think he might be working and is to busy to talk right now???  :stupid  :rolleyes

On the other hand... now, all some people do is talk on their cell phones whenever they get a chance.  I've got one lady that talked to her daughter every 15 minutes... which I guess wouldn't be to bad, since we're not super busy most of the time, but her daughter is 24 years old...  :beat  She seems to have it under control for now.

Personally, my family knows I don't usually take personal calls when I'm at work, other than maybe a quick 2 or 3 minute conversation if it's important.  I'll just call everyone back after I get out of the office.

Now don't go thinkin' I'm a big meanie, but one of the reasons I recently had to fire a guy was because of cell phone use....he wouldn't put it down.

I think he was addicted to it...among other things. We would spot him sneaking out of the building to make or recieve calls.

I once left for a meeting and was driving down the block and spotted him hiding around the corner of a building on his phone! :eek

Personally, I keep mine on vibrate...and if I miss a call, oh well. :D

I don't believe people should have cell phones in the office, unless it's work related. When I was younger, we didn't have direct contact to our parents, so unless it was an emergency we didn't try and contact them. Now a days, kids call for the simplest reasons like: I know I'm on restriction, but can I play Playstation?........... I feel too many people are not focusing on work. When they are distracted by other things, including cell phone calls, they are not getting their JOB, that they are paid to do, done. This costs the company money, then they just pass along their losses to the consumer.

People say that "my kids only call in case of an emergency", which we all know is bullshit.

Also, I;m not saying it's only the kids calling that are the problem, people talking to b/f and g/f are just as time constrianing as kids, spouse and freinds.

I haven't restricted use of them at my place but I do have certain guidelines(particularly if they are driving). Most of my employees are considerate in their use of them.....many conduct biz on them daily.

Management and a few departments, mine included, have company cell phones but all they amount to is an expensive watch :stupid you don’t need the damn thing if you are sitting at a desk with a land line right next to you. Had a mine super ask me why I wouldn’t answer his calls :phone I told him well I’m half a mile down from the surface in a big hole in the ground and funny thing is I have no service down here :rolleyes The only thing it is good for is business trips.

Cell Phones are a pain in the  :ass  90% of "at work/business" calls are personal and take away from productivity....focken time wasters.  Many of us need them for business, but the majority are just for personal BS and personal posing.  Turn it off and check messages ON YOUR BREAK... :fight

Focken people walking around talking about nothing.... :beat   I'm standing in line a the check-out, and this lady answers hers and starts talking BLAH, BLAH, BLAH....pay the clerk and get the fock out of the way... :angry  :guns

Wait, this needs to go into the RANT Thread... :laugh
