Weekend arrests down; Compared to other big weekends, this year is not so bad

The Lake Havasu City Police Department arrested 91 people this past weekend, far more than a normal summer weekend but fewer than the summer's other holidays.

Because the Fourth of July is “more of a family type holiday,” it traditionally is the slowest of the three summer holidays, said Lt. Rich Sloma, LHC Police. Of the 91 total arrests, 84 were adults; seven were juveniles.

“For a Fourth of July, it's pretty normal,” Sloma said.

On Saturday, there were seven OUI arrests on the Bridgewater Channel, which is “a very high number for any holiday,” he said. “That's a significant number for one day.”

But the other numbers were normal compared to past Fourth of July holidays.

“The boat people have been very good,” he said. “The Channel has been not out of hand.”

This was due in part to there being more officers on duty, Sloma said. The department brought in extra officers from Bullhead City and Kingman. Normally, there are two boats in the Channel, with two officers in each boat. On Saturday, there were four boats.

On shore, there usually is a sergeant and three or four officers. On Saturday, there were two sergeants and 11 officers. There also was a mobile booking station on the Channel.

The number of boats on the Channel was “extremely high” on Sunday, but there was less foot traffic than Memorial Day, Sloma said. The humidity probably played a hand in that, he said.

About one-third of the weekend's arrests occurred on the Channel. Eighteen were for underage consumption, both normal for a holiday weekend.

“Halfway through the holiday weekend, it's gone extremely well,” Sloma said. “The Police Department is pleased.”

The lakes weren't too bad this weekend.  Pleasant was less than expected and stayed relatively safe...until today.  We had one drown at Humbug, tried to recover him today but it's almost 100' deep there with 30' trees at the bottom.  We'll try again tomorrow.  The Salt River was rough this weekend.  5 near drownings, one of which will probably become a drowning, 2 drownings, and an ultralite crash this morning.  Fortunately, both drowning victims were recovered.  I got my share of seat time on the airboat this weekend though.

We started out the year with a pretty low (4) drowning total, but almost doubled it this weekend.  I think we'll come close to our yearly average of 18 once again.

I was amazed how light the traffic was on the river this weekend... I was expecting it to be utter chaos like memorial weekend.  Put it was surprisingly slow...

Another thing is there wasnt a 5mph zone by devils elbow...  Go figure...  They must have taken it out to prevent a bottle neck or something???

Officials pleased with quiet holiday

BY DAVID BELL
Wednesday, July 5, 2006 11:02 PM MDT

All of the public safety agencies on land and water report a relatively quiet holiday weekend.

“Traditionally, July Fourth is the quietest of the three major holidays,” said Dan Doyle, interim Chief of Police for Lake Havasu City, during a joint Police-Fire Department press conference Wednesday. “We are always pleased when we have no major accidents or incidents. Our goal is to have a low number of arrests.”

Statistics from the Mohave County and San Bernardino County Sheriffs' Offices back up the assertion that things were calm. Mohave County reports responding to two boating accidents with injury and taking 14 people into custody, 12 for operating a boat under the influence (OUI) and two for minors consuming alcohol.

San Bernardino County also had 12 OUI arrests along with one warrant arrest. It also responded to two minor injury boating accidents.

Final arrest numbers for the city were issued, showing 142 people taken into custody for the five-day holiday weekend. Drug and alcohol charges accounted for 57 of the arrests, down from 65 in 2005. Most of those arrested - 58 - were residents while 47 came from California.

The city also responded to 1,342 calls for service and issued 367 citations throughout the holiday. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office issued 58 safety violations on the water, 54 safety warnings and provided 23 boater assists. San Bernardino County's Sheriff's deputies issued 65 citations along with responding to one medical aid call.

Sgt. Tim Smith with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said he was pleased to see a pair of statistics missing from the weekend totals. “We had no fatalities on the water this weekend,” he said. “And I'm not aware of any citations for kids without a personal floatation device (PFD).”

All children 12 years old and younger must be wearing a properly fitted PFD while on the water.

Lake Havasu City Fire Marshall Chip Shilosky took part in the press conference, explaining that the fire department responded to 110 calls throughout the holiday weekend, with 40 back-to-back calls for service.

“That's critical in our deployment of personnel, the right personnel in the right location to handle these calls. Most of these were in the Bridgewater Channel,” Shilosky said.

Out of the total number of calls, 26 were lake and Bridgewater Channel related, three were for brush fires, three for residential fire concerns and one to assist Desert Hills. The rest ran the gamut of bee threats to providing medical assistance.

Two days - Saturday and Sunday - saw elevated carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the Bridgewater Channel, however, testing found that neither day had levels that required closure of the Channel. Unlike non-holiday weekends, when Community Emergency Response Team members conduct CO testing, Fire Department personnel performed the monitoring throughout the holiday weekend.

The Fire Department and Police teamed on Tuesday, assigning four fire inspectors to handle police calls for illegal fireworks activity. “We had a lot of cooperation from visitors as well as locals, some of whom were not aware that fireworks are illegal. They did turn them over and we will dispose of them properly,” Shilosky said.

There were no citations issued for fireworks activity as a result.
