Two men arrested late Thursday in the "Serial Shooter" killings have also been linked to arson fires at two Glendale Wal-Mart stores.
Authorities say they have connected Dale Hausner, 33, and Samuel Dieteman, 30, to the June 8 blazes, which caused an estimated $7 million in damage.
The fires were set about 45 minutes apart in the plastic-flower aisles in the back of the 24-hour stores at 5605 W. Northern Ave. and 5010 N. 95th Ave. Besides the damage to the stores' inventory, six people were treated for smoke inhalation.
"We're very, very confident that the two suspects in custody are our suspects in the arson investigation," Bill Newell, a special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Friday.
Six people have been killed and 18 wounded in the Serial Shooter spree in the Valley since May 2005, one of two serial-killing episodes that have spread fear through much of the Valley.
The arson suspects were believed to be captured on surveillance cameras. Investigators said the two drove away from the stores in the same vehicle, a light two-door sedan, possibly a late '90s Toyota Camry.
Early Friday morning, a tow truck appeared at the gated apartment complex in Mesa where the suspects were arrested, and a half hour later, a silver, later-model Toyota Camry was towed away.
A $20,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever was responsible for the Wal-Mart fires. Newell did not reveal whether a tip led arson investigators to connect that case to the Serial Shooter case. Phoenix police, however, said the arrests were made following numerous tips from the public.
In a joint investigation, authorities of the Glendale Fire Department and the ATF developed information that indicated the arson suspects "might in fact be the Serial Shooters" and immediately contacted the Phoenix Police Department, Newell said.
"This was not the sole piece of information," Newell said. "We had lots of pieces of the puzzle."
The shooting investigation and charges that may stem from it take precedence over the arson investigation, Newell added.
"Once we learned the information in our investigation, the arson was secondary," he said. "Our primary concern was getting these guys off the streets. The No. 1 focus was the homicide investigation."
