Give me your thoughts on this one.  I've been eying a project boat for a while now, let me know if this sounds reasonable.  It's a 1997 22' Magic with a carbed 502, Volvo duo-prop. Its been sitting in the water and there's some blistering in the gelcoat below the rub rail, enough that it would need to be re-glassed.  Needs new upholstery and doesn't have a trailer.  Mechanically, everything works fine.

Now, here's what I've been told it would cost to get it back into shape.  New trailer=$4000, new upholstery=$3000, new gelcoat (and I got this estimate from someone in the business that told me they can get this price) $100/foot for one color, about $3000 total with some simple graphics.  So, 10 grand and some elbow grease to fix it up and I'm pretty sure I can get this thing REAL CHEAP.  I've also considered there's probably another $2000 that may pop up for misc. items like batteries, hardware, things like that.

My thought on this is that I'd end up with a boat that's the size I like, and with the new interior and gelcoat, I can make it look however I want, kind of like having a new one built.  If it comes out nice and I'm happy with it, it would replace the Nautique, which I'm not unhappy with at all.  I didn't get a chance to check the hours on it, but I'm told its low, it basically sat in a slip in a marina and deteriorated, although the carpet looks pretty good.

So, there you have it...opinions please.

You say say the boat was just sitting in the water at the marina.  Is that salt or fresh water?

Trailers, interior, motor, all those things are pretty straight forward.
I'd inspect that hull very closely. Blistering can be minor or it can be an indication of an underlying nightmare.

Hopefully minor, but make sure that the price you were quoted includes all the labor involved to make sure the hull is faired properly before they shoot it.

Good luck, hope it works out for you! :good

Sounds good to me!  Is the volvo duo a good performance drive???

I know nothing of them...  But they seem to be on all of the luxury larger ocean boats

Volvo's are good drives and motors.  I had a volvo on my last boat which was a 21' Wellcraft.  The only problem I came across was that it was hard to find replacement parts because it wasn't as popular as Mercury.

Did you have some power in front of it?  I would think they would be solid...

I was runnin a 351 with the Volvo set up.  My friend runs a 30' Phantom with a Volvo 500 hp set up and he has a duoprop which he runs offshore racing as well.
Volvo has been around for years and they are in offshore racing competitions too.
However if you ask me which is better, then I don't know because that would be like asking who makes the best car.  They are all good as long as you maintain them the way they should be. Just my .02

My understanding is the duo-props were made for the bottom end pull and not top end speed. I have heard that a single prop set up will bring more top end, but will lack the bottom end pull needed to get on plain quickly....

I have a friend with a 300 hp volvo set up on an open bow Stingray 220. He is a large guy and he gets it going over 60 mph with full tanks of gas, 3 passengers, and a days picnic gear on board. I'd say those duo-props do just fine on the top and bottom ends. :good

Agreed, and this is my biggest concern with this project, that and what this guy will actually sell it to me for.  I'm pretty confident about my estimates for the other things, but I have no clue on glass prices.  I got that figure from Phil Bergeron, and I have a great deal of respect for his input, I consider him to be an absolute expert on performance boats.  However, the guy he was speaking for has not looked at the boat, so I will need him to go out and inspect it to see if the glass can actually be repaired.  For those of you who actually know something about glass work (you know who you are) the best way for me to describe the visible damage is it looks like solvent pop or fisheyes on a paint job. When I first looked at the boat, I thought they were rock chips coming off the trailer.  Some of them go all the way through the gel and into the mat.  All of them are below the waterline.  It was stored in fresh water.

Phil gave me an idea of what I should offer the guy for it, and that price would keep it under the NADA price.  Looks like a nice boat and I've checked around and the general opinion that I've gotten is that Magic builds a decent boat.  Certainly not in the league of a Fountain, Formula, or Hallett, but still a good quality boat.

I love projects, but for the most part I like the kind that I can do most of the work myself, and this one would be mostly done by others.  We'll see how it pans out, gotta get the glass guy to look at it first, then find out what this guy will take for it.

By the way, anybody got a good line on trailer builders?  Phil told me he could get me a decent deal on a VIP.  I mentioned Extreme and he said they are real spendy.
