Well I've been scarce around here lately, and I miss it. Things have been more than hectic at work lately and the shifts have been long. End of summer hits us hard and trying to get any family time after 18 hours at work gets tough. I've been real short on and can't wait now for summer to end.
So, last night I'm heading home from what I hope will be the last call I get. I worked 19 hours on Saturday followed by 2 hours of sleep then back to work. At this point I just want to go home, grab a bite because I hadn't eaten anything all day, then go to bed. I'm driving home from a hiker rescue on Ballentine Trailhead about 20 miles north of Saguaro Lake when my cell phone rings. The service is terrible out there so I'm surprised, caller ID says its my wife's cell. My 14 year old daughter is on the phone and tells me that my wife fell down the stairs and can't move. I ask her if she called 911 and the phone cuts out. Normal drive time from there to home is 35 minutes, this is where lights and sirens come in handy. I light it up and start haulin' ass towards home. On the way I call my dispatcher and tell them to send the Fire Department to my house. I make it home in 18 minutes. Gilbert Fire Department is there and have her loaded in an ambulance ready to go, she is conscious, in a lot of pain, but still has full sensation and use of her extremities .
They transport her to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, the nearest level one trauma center for a battery of tests and scans, showing no broken bones and no internal injuries, just lots of bruising and abrasions. Keep her there for a couple hours and I drive her home. She's been in bed all day, but her spirits are up and mobility improving already, she's a trooper! I finally get a day off to take care of her.
Gilbert Fire Department and Scottsdale Healthcare were the best. Ultimate professionals all the way, thanks.
Anyway, gotta get back to playing nurse, hope to get back to with you guys soon.
See you all later, Jeff.

| Quote (familyties @ Aug. 15 2006,7:12 pm) | Wow that must have been a longest 18 min. of your life. Â Best wishes to you and your wife. |
Yes it was. Hearing the words "...fell down the stairs and can't move" sent chills down my spine.
Things are looking good and she's made considerable improvement already. She's gotten herself up and out of bed several times today and walks around for five or ten minutes at a time before she has to go back to bed. She's already getting bored and wants to go back to work, sorry babe, not gonna happen yet.
It seems she was feeling ill on Sunday and spent most of the day in bed and was on her way downstairs to get something to drink. When she tried to step down on the first step, she collapsed and went head-over-heals several times on the way down. I can't believe she didn't break anything. It's kind of funny, about a year ago I got a similar call when the gas BBQ exploded on her. She ended up with some serious second and third degree burns from that one but has completely healed, now this. Good thing she's tough.
Anyway, I printed out all of your well wishes and it really made her smile, thanks everyone!
It's worked out well for me, I got the week off until Saturday, but I've been typing out reports at home and have to go in for a short while tomorrow to do some paperwork that can't be done at home. Still, it's been a nice break.

Now, just stay home and pamper her.
