Who uses a prop-lock or devise to try to prevent the propellers from being stolen :confused

Am I paranoid or is it common to have props stolen?

It's never a bad idea to have a security device, whether it's a prop or the whole boat. I don't have a Prop Lock, but mine only goes to where it can be stolen a couple of times a year,,,,,

I'm kinda in that scenario......my boat doesn't sit out where its at risk much at all. Beside the fact its such a common prop.
I can see if its unique, counter rotating or super expensive surface drive unit...

What does a prop lock look like. I might have one as I am trying to pull mine off right now and it's giving me a fit. I thought I might have to run down and get a puller.

It takes 5 minutes to pop the prop off how lazy can you get :laugh $600+ for a prop and who knows how much more to get it dialed in right and you leave it there for the taking, ought to just put a sign on it "Tricked out prop free for the taking" :rotflmao Not to mention all the shit on the road that can ruin it!..  :rolleyes

As already stated.  Takes less than 5 minutes to remove it.  Why spend the money on a prop lock if you dont have to.

If you don't need a puller it's on too loose IMHO
Get a puller.

Well I'm far from a pro on outdrives but if the prop ain't tight on the shaft wouldn't that contribute to vibration and wear on the prop and the shaft???.. :stupid

You shouldn't need a prop puller (Point in fact I don't even think they make one for I/O's?)  for an I/O style drive.

Here's the correct recipe for how tight to tigthen a prop on a Bravo or Alpha Drive..  Put your prop on the outdrive (make sure your thrust washer is in there)    Put little key thingy on prop shaft, and nut on top of key thing..  Take your standard 12 inch socket handle..  Tighten the nut down to pretty close to the key thingy..   Line up the key thingy with the nut and go the rest of the way in..   Now tighten the shit out of it.   Not so tight where your hanging on the wrench or anything, but tight enough that you'd most certainly have to put some muscle into loosening it.   See if the tabs on your key thingy line up with any of the indentations on the prop hub.   If not, either tighten it just a hair more to get them to line up, or if that's not possible loosen (yes I said loosen) just a hair to get them to line up, and then hammer one or two of them down..

Not exactly rocket science on the torque specs.. ;)

GoFastRacer, the props on I/O's are lined up on a long shaft that's splined going through the prop.  There's very little (atleast there shouldn't be) wiggle room to begin with.  Once you snug it down there's no vibration etc.. unless you got an outta whack prop.

River Dave,

Howdy neighbor. Nice post on how to tighten your prop. Pretty much how I did it.

For those techy types, that just gotta know, 55lbs of torque is what is spec for a Bravo.
