Boy injured in boat crash
Melissa Pinion-Whitt, Staff Writer

NEEDLES - An 11-year-old jet ski rider was seriously injured on the Colorado River late Monday after he collided with a 21-foot boat.

The boy, whose name was not released, was flown to a hospital in Las Vegas. for treatment, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies said. His condition was not known today.

Sheriff's deputies came to an area near the Needles Marina on the river at 5:45 p.m. on a report of a boating crash.

Deputies said the child was riding a stand-up style Yamaha jet ski north on the river when he turned in front of the Hallett open bow boat, deputies said. The child was attempting to turn into the entrance to the marina.

The boat operator tried to avoid striking the boy, but couldn't avoid him.

Eight injured in early Monday boat accident

WINFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN— Eight people escaped serious injury early Monday when a speedboat catapulted over a pontoon boat in Winfield Township’s Indian Lake.

A Fisher pontoon boat was anchored about 300 feet offshore on the lake’s west side at 12:21 a.m. when a 17-foot Four Winns speedboat operated by Christopher Williams, 31, of Howard City raced out of a channel toward it.

Michele Rodammer, 40, of Howard City was one of five people aboard the pontoon admiring the midnight sky and enjoying the last vestiges of summer. She said they switched on the pontoon boat’s marker lights when they saw the speedboat but it kept heading straight for them.

“I saw it come out of a channel just flying and yelled ‘No, no, no’ and that’s the last I remember,” Rodammer said. “I must have gone into shock.”

According to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office in Stanton, the speedboat struck the pontoon head-on and catapulted completely over it, through the canopy. Williams told police he didn’t see the pontoon boat before the impact.

Pontoon boat passenger Marnitta Hockstra, 44, of Howard City said the speedboat’s hull struck her head and upper body. She feels blessed to be alive but has multiple bruises on her head, face and upper body along with several cracked ribs.

“You never know how loud a boat motor is until it goes over your head,” she said. “I thought the propeller was coming at me. It was like being on an airplane that’s going down. There’s nothing you can do.”

Rodammer was treated at the Spectrum Health United Memorial Kelsey Campus in Lakeview on Monday for a concussion and minor facial scratches.

Todd Aleksynas, 30, and Bruce Vander Hulen, 42, both of Grand Rapids, were riding with Williams in the speedboat. David Perry, 55, Irving Miller, 47, and Grant Rodammer, 46, all of Howard City, were on the pontoon with Hockstra and Michele Rodammer. All but Michele Rodammer were treated at the scene by Montcalm County Emergency Services ambulance personnel.

“I can’t believe we’re still alive,” Hockstra said. “God must have a plan for us.”

Hockstra and Michele Rodammer said the speedboat was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the pontoon boat. Montcalm County Sheriff’s Lt. Karl Kluwe said police and a local Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer are unsure how fast the speedboat was traveling.

“That’s the part we are still investigating,” he said.

The DNR officer has specialized training in watercraft accident reconstruction and is continuing the investigation with the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Marine Patrol Deputy Mike Kotenko said the state does not have a law regulating when boats must slow down at night and he isn’t aware of a similar ordinance governing Indian Lake.

“A lot of lakes have a local ordinance for high speed boating,” Kotenko said.

Overall, I actually thought it was a pretty mellow season.

There is always some tragedy, and that is terrible but it seems like past years were worse. I dunno, I could be wrong.

Sure seems to me that if you are sitting anchored in the water you are supposed to have at least the white marker light on....correct me if I'm wrong. :confused
.
I'm also amazed the article didn't reference alchohol at all like they usually do.. :stupid

That area of the river in Needles can get pretty wild that time of day with all the boats headed to the barn. :eek

I'm not one for restricting things, but they should at least have a zone outside the marina there and outside Jack Smith marina where you can't tow skiers/wakeboarders/tubes, etc. or ride PWC's. Or a speed limit maybe.

That would make it safer for the boats coming in and out. slowing down and speeding up. I've seen novice boaters literally block the entrance to the marina because they can't handle the current there. Throw a few knuckleheads on jet skis into the mix and you've got big problems. :rolleyes

Boating Accident Raises Regulation Concerns

September 5, 2006 - An accident at Shaver Lake over the weekend is raising questions about California's boating regulations.

Fresno county sheriff deputies believe they've found the boat that hit the little boy and they're interviewing dozens of people hoping someone can confirm it.

A boating safety advocate says this accident only highlights a larger problem, lack of boater education and safety standards.

11-year-old Dallen McEntire is in critical condition. On Saturday, his dad was towing him on a kneeboard on Shaver Lake when a boat ran over him. The propeller sliced right through his little head giving him a very large laceration across his nose, up his forehead and through the center of his skull.

The 6th grader from Bakersfield is in a medically induced coma. Doctors are hoping the swelling in his brain will go down soon. Fresno county sheriff deputies believe they have identified the boat and responsible driver, but they need a witness, someone to confirm that the yellow boat in question is the same one that hit Dallen.

The number of boating accidents in California jumped from 750 in 2004 to 800 in 2005, and boating fatalities increased from 43 to 58 in the same year.

The Director of the California Department of Boating and Waterways blames boaters' unpredictability partly on the state not requiring safety education classes. p> He says California is way behind the 36 other states that already have these laws. Although he's working on a proposed bill now, he predicts it will be 2015 before it's even phased in. Boater Safety Advocate, Robert Townsend, says, "When you see the behavior of people out there...They don't follow the rules of navigation and they do really really dumb things, you'll see that there's a need, and beneath the water is this hidden disaster..." Robert Townsend lobbies legislators for higher safety standards like propeller guards. He says the technology is available and inexpensive, but boat manufacturers aren't interested. "All a manufacturer has to do is design it within their mold, " said Townsend. He further says a prop guard would have prevented the extensive head wounds Dallen McEntire is dealing with.

Also on the market right now are dye packs that would permanently mark boats involved in hit and run accidents.

Cali is moving FAST to mandatory boating safety classes....I expect it as early as next January.  I support the effort... :good

Submit proof with your registration update....the insurance industry will follow and require it be on file with them.  Rental companies are going to have to come up with a solution.... :stupid

Invest a few hours on a Saturday....no big deal and hopefully it leads to safer waters for all.... :cool

After years of education and public awareness campaigns by PHX FD, the summer of 2006 has basically ended with 0 drowning fatals in swimming pools!  This is awesome news!!

Maybe that kind of campaign is whats needed in boating(?)
