He may have flown up the flue if you'd covered the glass and darkened it...birds tend to go for the light source when trying to escape.
That'd be weird to wake up to a squacking pecker... :laugh
I suppose you don't have the screen up top the chimney so Santa won't get snagged :D :D

He's a lucky bird, if I would have caught him pounding on the eave of the house, he'd probably be dead right now... I reached in there, grabbed him, and tossed him out the sliding glass door.  

I need to go check and see what became of my screen on the chimney now...
