How can I restore my laptop?  :stupid

Best buy wanted $200 to do that, but I don't feel like spending that kind of money on a lap top thats 3 years old.  It was given as a gft and still works fine, but its just a little slower than before.

I tried to F-10 it but that doesn't seem to work.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Often times computers come with CD-ROM's to restore your computer.  Do you have those?  Usually you have options to reinstall programs or to reformat the hard drive which wipes EVERYTHING out.  Then after you use the restore CD, it's like it was on day one.  You'll need to download updates for some of the software (most importantly Windows) to get that up to date again.  If you don't have the restore CD, you can still reformat the hard drive, but you would have to replace all the software, which can be expensive.  For example, you couldn't even use a Windows upgrade, because it won't see a prior version of Windows. :banghead

I can help you with this if you want. :)

I would need all the help I can get since I'm not computer literate.  :break

I don't have the original cd's since it was given as a gift, but I do have a MS Office cd from my old desktop.

If I did that c:format deal, would that erase my windows xp too?  :stupid

YES IT WOULD! :eek

Reformatting is a last resort anyway.  There are many things you can do to speed things up beforehand.  You can uninstall all of the software you don't want, defragment the hard drive, etc. :)

Bring it along to our next drinking fest and I'll look at it for you. :beer

Computers should be formatted at least once a year to keep them running tops, but once a month a scandisk and defrag should be done!. Removing programs only opens up space on the drive and won't make it run faster, unless a lot of programs are running at the same time. Also when software is removed, there's aways junk left behind it's never a 100% gone, that junk stays in the system folder and also pollutes the Registry, there are programs that clean up the Registry but a format is really the way to go after a period of time!.. You need the recovery disk because there are drivers on it that are not available for download, but you can get a recovery disk from the MFG no problem. Once you have a recovery disk, save all your files to an ouside source then put the recovery disk in and follow the instructions, it will format the drive and reinstall the OS and will be all brand new again!.. :good

I use Norton Ghost to back-up what I want to keep and restore. I have a few computers in my shipping dept. that need to be reloaded about once every six months.

I'm not sure what those guys are doing...but I always have a spare workstation ready and waiting. :D
