Yes Zone Alarm is about the best out there and it is free, the Pro just has more bells and whistles but not necessary!.. If you have XP though you don't need it!..

The XP firewall is pretty good but you are still exposed to the internet with a public IP address. I would suggest you use a Router with a firewall built in though. That way your PC/Laptop is using a private IP address while the public IP is on the router. Plus, you can connect as many PCs to the net as you want. Good ones are made by Netgear and Linksys. In that order IMHO.

Junk gets through becuase the firewall doesn't scan your email. A good filter for that is SpamBayes. http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/
I have used that on a lot of the computers I've worked on. Its easy to use and once trained it catches just about everything.
Spyware too, that comes through on port 80 (HTTP) and the firewall just sees it as more web traffic. Get your favorite Spy Ware Remover or a good popup blocker to take care of that.

I ran AVG for a month or so, good program, but it did not solve all my issues with those "trojan" software pop-ups....xsoft finally got 'em...
