Jeff here.
Most homes are built out of concrete. even the roof. If Angie will be so kind I have pics of the process, I'm a big fan of housing construction and make it a point in my travels to study the standards in which homes are built in different area's based on resources. It's wierd maybe but I really find it interesting. I would gather to say the consrtuction process was second to none. Very labor intensive but quality none the less. All the concrete was mixed by hand with a mixer, sand sifted from the site and concrete powder deliverd in a truck. A lot of styrofoam is used for locations such as plumbing and to help offset costs and weight in locations where they can use it. The roof is a prime example. Bond beams are poured in place much like a conventional stack roof and styrofoam inserted in the gaps between. Then more concrete is applied. The palm frawns are applied to the roof as a moisture barrier as we all know concrete is pourous.
Fire hazard? No not at all, but heavy on the maintenece side. They need to be kept up yearly and replaced completly within 3 years. Some homes have fired clay roofs grouted in place, this would be better IMHO but lacks the look of the later.
I somehow managed to take about 6 hours out of my trip and go work on a construction site. My fellow adventurers thought I was nuts, and that I missed working.
100% of the home was concrete on the house I worked on, they where laying out an entertainment center when I left, it was done the next morning when I stopped in.
Of course some people live in grass huts still down there and a home is a dream they will never experience.
