One of the last pieces of Vegas history. The casino in the book "Casino" was the Stardust...

NEW YORK, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Two of the most iconic structures on the Las Vegas Strip are about to get a new home. The lobby of the landmark La Concha Motel is being dismantled to become part of the Las Vegas Neon Museum, the downtown open-air exhibit which houses some of the city's most historic neon signs and artifacts. The La Concha structure will be restored and reassembled to eventually become the museum's visitor's center, gallery and gift shop. The once glittering sign of the 48-year-old Stardust hotel, which closed in November, will also be moved to the museum early next year.
The La Concha Motel was built in 1961 by Paul Revere Williams, the country's first acclaimed African-American architect. With soaring arches and thin-shelled poured concrete, the building was created with a "mid-century modern style" and was considered an architectural and engineering marvel in its time. The Stardust was the largest hotel in the Las Vegas area when it opened in 1958 and its famous sign was the world's tallest neon sign when it debuted in 1968.
The Neon Museum is a 501 © 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of Las Vegas through the collection, restoration and preservation of the city's most iconic signs and artifacts. Established in 1996, the Neon Museum features classic neon signs from the 1940's to today. The collection is displayed as public art throughout the downtown area, with many pieces located along the Fremont Street Experience. Additional signs are housed inside the Neon Boneyard. The Boneyard is currently available for group tours by appointment only (www.neonmuseum.org). Donations to the Neon Museum are also accepted through the website.

Last sept. when we were in Vegas we tryed to see the Neon musium. YOu have to make reservations 48hrs in advance. The musium is curently outdoors in a lot north of the strip. We were told that it is supposed to move into a warehouse sometime this year. They were asking I think $50 donations to tour. This lot is not just Neaon signs but several of the old signs of casinos and hotels of the strip and down town. Looked to be a pretty cool place to see the history of the strip.

Following the glory days of the 1970s and '80s and the mostly failed experiment in the 1990s to become more of a family destination, Las Vegas' new wave is upscale, big-money glamour. There's the luxurious Wynn Las Vegas, which took the place of the imploded Desert Inn. And the $7 billion MGM Mirage CityCenter project, which is being built on the site of the old Boardwalk Hotel.
Early next year, the Stardust casino and hotel that was once the largest in Las Vegas will be imploded. At nearly 50, it is simply too old. It will be replaced by Boyd Gaming Corp.'s $4 billion Echelon Place resort.
Even Donald Trump is building a hotel. Not everyone in Las Vegas sees this as progress. More than one person on my recent visit spoke wistfully of the "good old days" when the Mob ran things. "The Mob would comp you a room, they'd comp you a meal, drinks -- the corporations will take money out of your pocket without you even doing anything," one cab driver groused.

So true....my wife's uncle is a "player" of sorts, and the Union Plaza is the ONLY place he will visit these days...

Jeff and I saw Elvis at the Stardust a few years ago. I think his Grandma probably cried when she heard the news (about the stardust, not Elvis ) She loved that place.
