The past year was the deadliest year on Arizona waterways since 1998, said Kevin Bergersen, Arizona Game & Fish Department boating law administrator.
In 2006, Arizona waterways were the location of 255 accidents with 153 injuries and 14 deaths, Bergersen said. "That does not count the two people who died in California or the two who died in Nevada, on the other side of the (Colorado) river."
The U.S. Coast Guard lists Arizona as one of the most dangerous states in the country in which to operate watercraft, with six of the nation's 15 most dangerous waterways, he added. The six are the Colorado River and Lakes Mead, Havasu, Mohave, Powell and Pleasant.
"We beat out Long Island Sound, Lake Michigan, the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and Chesapeake Bay," he said. One reason: more users, less lake.
The 2006 waterways record underscores the need for more boater education, Bergersen said. Some 78 percent of recreational boaters and watercraft users involved in accidents have never participated in formal boating safety education. Such training is not required in Arizona.
The top reasons for watercraft accidents are operator inexperience, weather, navigation rule violations and operating under the influence, Bergersen said. "Five out of the 14 fatalities this year were wind-related."....someone who falls overboard in strong winds may be unable to get back to the boat if the wind is pushing it away.

I'm looking for more details on the fatalities...not to be morbid but to quantify comments...
As I recall, it was more of a "mixed bag"....Havasu locals, Nevada residents, the AZ schoolteacher and the Cali boat driver, the Cali cheerleader, out-of-state vacationeers..... and not all involved vessels in motion...
We personally witnessed three different accidents this year, two of them after dark at Site Six in Havasu....
