TV show “Lost†has its producers making plans for a dignified ending, in an attempt to not overstay the series’ welcome. Citing the case of “The X-Filesâ€, executive producer Carlton Cuse said he didn’t want “Lost†to trickle away into general disinterest. "That was a great show that probably ran two seasons too long," he explained. "That is a cautionary tale for us."
“Lost†will not end very soon though, but its producers want to set some kind of endpoint, in order to help the writers concoct a satisfactory conclusion to the mysterious adventures of the castaway heroes.
"Once we figure out when that will be, a lot of the questions will go away," Cuse said at the press tour of the Television Critics Association on Sunday. This strategic move will also help the show end on a high note.
"It's time for us now to find an end point for this show," Cuse explained. "It's always been discussed that the show would have a beginning, middle and end." He added that the finale of “Lost†would wipe any concerns among fans of the complex show that the mystery is actually as mysterious to them as it is to the viewers.
He cited the example of JK Rowling, who has said her 'Harry Potter' series will end with the book she is currently writing, "which gives everybody a sort of feeling of certainty that that story is driving toward a conclusion".
Show creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof revealed he wanted to continue making the series, "as long as it's still good", but he added that about 100 episodes should suffice to tell the story satisfactorily.
"Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 to 100 episodes was going to be a version of 'Lost' where we never had to do the bad season, the stall season, where we had to back off the story we wanted to tell," he explained. "Season one is the introduction, season two is the hatch, season three is the Others, I don't want to tell you what season four is going to be, and then there's a wrap-up season. 'Lost' will have had 93 episodes by the end of season four "and I imagine that would be very close to where it would end ideally", Lindelof said.
Lindelof admitted that he wants back the 14 percent drop in viewing figures. "We really believe in the show and the audience we're getting. But if we write towards getting them back, we may alienate the audience that we already have."
“Lost†has reached its third season. In 2005, the show was awarded an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. In January 2006, it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama. “Lost†also won the 2005 Writers Guild of America award for outstanding achievement in writing for a dramatic television series, the 2005 Producers Guild Award for best production, and the 2005 Screen Actors Guild Award for best ensemble cast.
