In the past 8 or 10 years we have had an HP, Compaq, Micro (generic), Gateway and a Dell. IMO, the Dell has been the best value.

I have an HDF 2800+.

In other words, I built my own, but it's only 32 bit.  64 bit processing is starting to become popular. :)

I've been around a lot of PC's and Dells always come out on top.

I just priced a dell for 638.00.  3 Ghz, 256MB Video Card, 512 MB Ram, 7.1 Sound, dual DVD Drives (DVD, DVD/RW) with XP Home and a 19 Flat panel monitor.  Theres a bunch more but you get the idea.   You could upgrade to 1 Gig ram and still be below 700 bucks.

Check this site out for the current deals.

I recommend that you stay away from Compaq.  My mom got a new desktop after two years from them (thank goodness she got the extended warranty).  The kids laptop has a design flaw that causes it to overheat and shut off (even with a flat fan underneath).  Our Gateway has been a champ out there in the office with the dust, spiderwebs, heat, cold.  It is 5 years old and still truckin'. . . I take that back, it will be six years in March.

Hands down, out of the box, Dell.  Our Gateway has been good, but they are struggling...

Another way to go would be a "local" builder/computer store.  They use the best stuff and will build you a machine to fit your needs, at a decent price... :good

You usually can't go wrong with Dell or HP, I'd say try to get a refurb... You can get ton's of options for little $$

Hurry and buy NOW, so you can get the current Windows and avoid the potential problems with the new VISTA Operating System.... :eek   I have not checked on it, but based on past history, new Microsoft OS products tend to be "problematic" when first launched.... :break

ComputerWorld article on why NOT to buy VISTA yet

Little shop.... :bowdown   Local service... :beer  They will take care of your needs better, explain things and answer your questions, along with making future upgrades much easier as your needs change... :good

With the new Windows "Vista", you will need 2 gigs of ram to run right, so upgrade that and get a min 256k AGI compatible video card.

I would also add a second hard disk for data storage.....River Cutie Pix & iPod files take lots of space... :love  :laugh
