So my father came into this inheritance and put my name a brand new boat (18' pontoon w/75hp merc). A pontoon boat-because he's big (over 350 lbs) and a little unsteady. He's 74 and wanted to take all his grand kids fishing.. while he still can. He thought we'd take as many of his grandsons (he's got seven) as wanted to go and my seven year old daughter. I chose the Avi Resort for this trip because I can't imagine him camping at Roosevelt Lake where we used to fish in the spring. The Avi has a free boat ramp and just seems like a good place for kids.

I love rivers, but I've never navigated them. He wants to fish from laughlin to lake havasu, which sounds great to me, except I'm worried about the kids... and him. I've found a guide map from davis dam to parker dam which shows restrooms, marinas, etc along the way, but I'm just wondering how easy it is to get up and down that stretch of river. I have visions of myself stuck on a sandbar out in the hot sun with 5 kids and a feeble old man.

I'd be most grateful for any information anyone can give me about boating/fishing from laughlin to havasu. I've scoured the net.. well that's how I found this forum.. and don't feel that well informed... yet.  I don't even know if the river's deep enough to make the trip.. that's my first question..  any tricky spots I need to watch out for?... and what will be good rest stops along the way...? stuff like that..

You've come to the right place.  Lots of folks here frequent that stretch of the river.   :cool

My best advice, launch after 10am....water level rises during the day :good

Might try staying at the BlueWater in Parker first. More like a lake than a river. Go during the week, stay away from holiday weekends.
As far as Roosevelt goes you can now rent trailer/condos at SpringCreek and they have rooms at Roosevelt Lake Resort (not a resort just a name), the road from Globe to the lake is much improved, you could even stay in Globe its only about 1/2 hour from the lake. Thats a long haul from Bisbee to the river and the fishing is So/So.

Here's a few links:

If you launch in the afternoon, the water will be high enough. However, the small ramp at the Avi has a current that can be a bit difficult, if you are new to launching.

If you intend to be near the AVi anytime during the late Spring through early Fall you will deal with multiple boats on the river from there on south to Parker dam.....some driving very fast.

Another option is the Land of Moofers :) :D  The Yuma area around Martinez Lake is some fair to good fishing with lots of places to stay close by. Never been there myself but its on my list of "need to go to's"

Thank you everyone.  Followed Ziggy's advice to follow AZKC's advice and used the link he provided to book two rooms at Spring Creek. Fished Roosevelt last time in a 14 foot aluminum seacraft (whatever Sears made then) with a 7.5 hp motor. Took forever to get across the lake especially w/my father and his friend and a head wind. They were fishing for crappie, and when they got out, since I didn't have a trolling motor, I rowed, trolling w/wiggle warts which were quite effective for smallmouth. Caught crappie, small mouth and large mouth on that trip.. 18 years ago.

I will make this trip sometime.. I'm a teacher (so I can fish), and turns out my Dad knows a "moofer" and wants to try that part of the river with his "moofer" guide next fall.

I really am thankful to all of you who responded. Any tips on fishing Roosevelt would be most welcome.  Thanks again...

Keep an eye on the AZ Game and Fish website. They'll give you a starting point on whats going on as far as fishing goes. It will also give info on what launch ramps are open. The lake level will have alot to do with how to fish the lake. When you heading up?

Since the lakes I frequent don't have the entertainment all you ballers enjoy. I have to find something to occupy my time, don't make me start talking about the books I read :finger  :laugh

Heading up the 12th and returning on 16th... Got the scoop on fishing.. Crappie best up in the saltriver mouth/channel... they are 20- 30 feet deep now and you can troll for them with john deere and black/blue/chartreuse grubs... if you want to stop and jig, use a marabou... Bass like 5 inch shad colored straight tail worms..(black worms always work for me ..anywhere) small mouth going for crawdad looking bait on rocky bottom (wigglewarts)... I hate using live bait but I'm sure Dad will insist on getting some minnows and worms... crappie always go for minnows...I'll report back.. even post some pics of the party..  thanks again you guys.. (and gals)

btw, I'll be in Laughlin the 10th... on my way to vegas for oldest son's wedding... decided to stay a couple of nights at the Colorado Belle.. MicroBrewery was the draw.. and wanted to see where I'm not going...

anyway, should I run into any of you helpful souls, I'd like to buy you a drink or two..  look for a blue eyed blond with receding hairline and bald patch on top roaming the bars and casinos with a raven haired beauty.  .
