Burglary suspect found stuck in store ductwork Brent Whiting The Arizona Republic Mar. 27, 2007 04:08 PM
An inebriated man was rescued Tuesday morning after he was found stuck in the air-conditioning ductwork of a Glendale supermarket.
Luis Velazquez-Lopez, 30, who was taken into custody after officers determined that it was a burglary attempt gone bad, said Officer Matt Barnett, a Glendale police spokesman.
"His only statement was something to the effect, 'How did I get there?' " Barnett said.
Investigators believe Velazquez-Lopez, who was wearing rubber gloves but no shirt, got stuck after climbing to the roof of the Food City supermarket, 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, he said.
From there, he managed to gain access to an air conditioning duct and dove inside head-first, falling about 17 feet before he got stuck, Barnett said.
Police believe he was trapped inside the ductwork for perhaps six or seven hours before Food City workers spotted debris on the floor, he said. Then they looked up and saw a finger sticking through the vent, Barnett said.
Police were called and initially thought the man inside the ductwork was dead, Barnett said. However, the man, who was covered in soot, made some sounds and firefighters were able to rescue him by pulling him to the rooftop.
Velazquez-Lopez, who doesn't speak any English, was obviously intoxicated, he said.
The suspect, who was given medical care, was to be booked in a Maricopa County jail on a charge of burglary. |
Just another dumb $hit, seems to be quite a few around here!..
