Man gets probation for sex with dead deer
Associated Press
Mar. 21, 2007 09:55 AM

SUPERIOR, Wis. - A 20-year-old Superior man received probation after he was convicted of having sexual contact with a dead deer.

The sentence also requires Bryan James Hathaway to be evaluated as a sex offender and treated at the Institute for Psychological and Sexual Health in Duluth, Minn.

"The state believes that particular place is the best to provide treatment for the individual," Assistant District Attorney Jim Boughner said.

Hathaway's probation will be served at the same time as a nine-month jail sentence he received in February for violating his extended supervision.

He was found guilty in April 2005 of felony mistreatment of an animal after he killed a horse with the intention of having sex with it. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail and two years of extended supervision on that charge as well as six years of probation for taking and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.

Hathaway pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor mistreatment of an animal for the incident involving the deer. He was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County Circuit Court.

"The type of behavior is disturbing," Judge Michael Lucci said. "It's disturbing to the public. It's disturbing to the court."

Man says sex toy caused his erratic driving
Canadian Press
Mar. 16, 2007 10:28 AM

VANCOUVER - A man says it wasn't the 10 beers and a double cocktail that caused his car to weave before being pulled over by police.

Kristopher Lind says his attention wasn't fully on his driving because his wife had a sex toy bought that day at a sex show in Vancouver.

At his impaired driving trial in B.C., Lind testified he and his wife were driving in Vancouver when they decided to check out the sex toy.

The package proved difficult for his wife to unwrap, so she handed it to him while he was driving.

He said he opened the package with one hand, using his knee to help steer the car, and did the same again to insert batteries.

Once the device was working, he said, his wife took it

He was arrested after he failed a roadside breathalyser test.

Lind denied he was driving while drunk.

The judge will render his verdict March 28.

26 animals found in motel room
Associated Press
Mar. 21, 2007 04:29 PM

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Cruz County authorities have confiscated more than two dozen animals from a couple who were hoarding them in their motel room they shared with two children.

Staff of the downtown Santa Cruz motel went to the man and woman's room on Tuesday because they had not heard from the couple in more than a month. Inside they found 20 domestic birds, a cat and a rabbit.

There was one dead bird in a cage and three others stuffed in the freezer.

"In this particular case, they also collected junk in addition to animals," said Todd Stosuy, animal control manager for the Santa Cruz County Animal Services Authority.

The couple, who shared the room with their two children, could face misdemeanor animal neglect charges, but they were not cited or arrested.

No joke when Ferrari destroyed
Reuters | Wednesday, 28 March 2007

LOS ANGELES: Maybe Eddie Griffin should leave the driving to his chauffeur.

The comedian destroyed a rare million-dollar Enzo Ferrari on Monday when he crashed it into a barricade while promoting a movie. He was unhurt in the low-speed incident, at Irwindale Speedway, about 32 km east of Los Angeles.

"The brother's good at karate and all the rest of that, but the brother can't drive," Griffin told reporters.

He was practicing for a celebrity charity racing event tied to his upcoming film, "Redline."

The car, one of just 400 manufactured, belonged to the film's producer, Daniel Sadek. Sadek estimated that the car was worth $US1.2 ($NZ1.69) million, and seemed philosophical about the loss, saying he was just happy that Griffin was unharmed.

The real-estate investor has put up his own money for the $US26 million picture, and allowed one of his two $US200,000 Porsche Carreras to be destroyed for a scene in it.

Burglary suspect found stuck in store ductwork
Brent Whiting
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 27, 2007 04:08 PM

An inebriated man was rescued Tuesday morning after he was found stuck in the air-conditioning ductwork of a Glendale supermarket.

Luis Velazquez-Lopez, 30, who was taken into custody after officers determined that it was a burglary attempt gone bad, said Officer Matt Barnett, a Glendale police spokesman.

"His only statement was something to the effect, 'How did I get there?' " Barnett said.

Investigators believe Velazquez-Lopez, who was wearing rubber gloves but no shirt, got stuck after climbing to the roof of the Food City supermarket, 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, he said.

From there, he managed to gain access to an air conditioning duct and dove inside head-first, falling about 17 feet before he got stuck, Barnett said.

Police believe he was trapped inside the ductwork for perhaps six or seven hours before Food City workers spotted debris on the floor, he said. Then they looked up and saw a finger sticking through the vent, Barnett said.

Police were called and initially thought the man inside the ductwork was dead, Barnett said. However, the man, who was covered in soot, made some sounds and firefighters were able to rescue him by pulling him to the rooftop.

Velazquez-Lopez, who doesn't speak any English, was obviously intoxicated, he said.

The suspect, who was given medical care, was to be booked in a Maricopa County jail on a charge of burglary.

A 15-year-old boy in Hamilton, Ontario, was finally rescued after dangling from a rope, nearly naked, upside down, in the minus-5-degree (F) cold, after a February attempt to spray graffiti on a new bridge went bad.

He got his inspiration while tobogganing alone, at about 8 p.m., and left his gloves and cell phone in the sled as he rappelled over the side of the bridge, but when the rope slipped and entangled him, he found himself upside down and then lost some clothes as he tried to wriggle free.

At about 10 p.m., when a party was breaking up at a nearby home, someone finally heard his screams for help.

PULLMAN, Wash. — A man was charged with theft and burglary after police said they found 93 pounds of women’s panties, brassieres and other underwear at his home.

Investigators believe Garth M. Flaherty, 24, took as many as 1,500 undergarments from apartment complex laundry rooms before he was caught, police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said.

A man was seen taking underwear from two laundry rooms Saturday, a witness recorded his license number, and Flaherty was identified from photographs, Tennant said.

Police found enough underwear in his bedroom to fill five garbage bags, Tennant said.

“He said he had a problem,” Tennant said.

Flaherty has been jailed on 12 counts of second-degree burglary and one of first-degree theft.

Police had previously received 12 reports of underwear thefts in the northeast part of town, where Washington State University is located.

“We were kind of concerned about how to match up bras and panties with victims,” Tennant said. “Based on the unique descriptions from a couple of women, we can tie him to those thefts.”

The underwear will be held as evidence until the case is resolved, after which their disposition is uncertain, Tennant said.

“Would you really want them back?” he asked. “I would say not.”
