A little scary AND close to home.

I heard about the fire when I left work yesterday. Then I remembered my sister had just told me the day before that my neice was on the island with her school.  :eek

The schools camp at Toyon Bay which is about 4 miles east of the airport, and this is right around where the fire got started (but up in the hills. The camp is on the coast).
My daughter was there with her school a few weeks ago.

By the time I called my sister, she only knew that the kids were moved to another camp site with only what they had on. She had no idea where the fire was in relation to the camp.
I was watching the news last night and using my noaa charts, I knew it was pretty close to where they were. Luckily the winds were not blowing towards them.  :bowdown

Turns out they had to hike to Avalon (about 3 miles) and got evacuated. My sisters family was up all night and my neice was safe at home at about 4 AM.

I'm sure they were never in any real danger, but you never know which direction the winds may decide to blow.
Guess that's an adventure my neice will remember for a while.

I heard that this morning. The Glendale, AZ kids were at the same Toyon Bay as my neice.
The AZ kids were doing the snokeling activities when they got the word to evacuate. They had to leave in just their swimsuits and were in Long Beach this morning waiting on Buses to take them home.

In this chart image A=Airport B=Toyon Bay 2=Avalon.
Toyon is between Long Point and Avalon. And maybe you can see in this image, inland from Toyon are RADIO TOWERS. Some reports are saying the fire started near some radio towers, others are saying it started near the airport??

Now in this photo of the fire/island, faceing kind of south. I believe Long Point is in the foreground and Avalon is under the smoke. And the Yellow circle is abouts where I believe Toyon Bay is.

AVALON Firefighters are dousing hot spots in the rugged back country of Santa Catalina Island five days after the start of a more than 4700 acre brush fire that threatened the island's main town of Avalon.

LA County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson says there is no active flame on the island.

Officials say the fire scene is 81 percent surrounded.

Fire crews and engines have started heading back to the mainland while ferries carrying workers and tourists resume trips to the island, a popular vacation spot 20 miles off the Southern California coast.

Electricity was restored to Avalon residents last night, but a few hundred residents on the island remain without power.

Damage has been estimated at $3 million.

Catalina fire is 81 percent contained
By Kelly Puente, Staff writer

AVALON - Aided by the cool, damp morning air, firefighters were making gains Monday on the blaze that has now scorched 4,750 acres of Catalina Island, Los Angeles County fire officials said.

As of Monday morning, the fire was 81 percent contained and is expected to be fully contained by 6 p.m. Tuesday, said inspector Ron Haralson of the LA County Fire Department.

Residents were allowed to return to Avalon over the weekend, and tourists will follow suit today, when Catalina Express resumes its regular ferry service from San Pedro and Long Beach.

Most tourist facilities, such as restaurants and hotels, are expected to be open, but the inner island is restricted to residents only, said Haralson.

Six firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the 5-day-old blaze, which came perilously close to Avalon, the island's main town. One home was destroyed, and six other structures, including barns and sheds, fire department officials.
