Small Plane Crashes Into Lake Pleasant
May 11th, 2007 @ 10:45pm  by Associated Press

Authorities said they found no sign of survivors after a small plane crashed into Lake Pleasant on Friday night.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call about 8:30 p.m. after several witnesses reported seeing a low-flying plane hit the lake.

Deputies found an estimated 100-yard field of debris in the water when they arrived.

Divers from the state Department of Public Safety assisted in a search and rescue operation but authorities said late Friday that there was no immediate sign of survivors in the water, which is about 120 feet deep.

Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Paul Chagolla said the search was called off for the night and would resume at dawn Saturday.

``We will be back out to do a dive operation and try to recover the wreckage and recover any bodies,'' Chagolla said.

Authorities said there was no immediate word on how many people were aboard the plane or its make, its destination or its point of departure.

Chagolla said a check of airports around the state did not turn up any overdue aircraft Friday night and ``we don't know who this plane is registered to.''

FAA: Pilot of crashed plane was buzzing friend on lake

10:05 AM Mountain Standard Time on Saturday, May 12, 2007

By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) -- The FAA says the pilot of a plane that crashed into Lake Pleasant outside Phoenix last night was apparently talking on a cell phone with a friend in a boat while flying only ten feet above the water.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot asked the friend to shine a flashlight into the air so he could spot him, then crashed into the lake right in front of the boat.

The plane broke up on impact and Maricopa County sheriff's officials called off a search for survivors late last night. They're planning to resume what they are calling a recovery effort this morning.

Gregor says it isn't known how many people may have been on the plane.

The plane is believed to be a Raytheon/Beechcraft King Air turboprop rented from a flight center in Scottsdale.

The aircraft type can seat as many as 13 passengers and a crew of two and is frequently used as a commuter plane.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

(Lake Pleasant is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix).

Search for crash victims halts
Recovery of bodies to continue Monday at Lake Pleasant

Lynh Bui
The Arizona Republic
May. 13, 2007 12:00 AM

Divers stopped searching Saturday evening for the bodies of two men whose plane crashed into Lake Pleasant while the pilot was reportedly talking on his cellphone and flying 10 feet above the water.

Family members of passenger Tim Marshall said they are frustrated that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office won't continue recovery efforts until Monday.

Members of Marshall's family identified the pilot as Phoenix resident Clay Whitney. The Sheriff's Office would not confirm the identity of the passenger or pilot.

"I don't really know if it's right to let people continue going out there and have a recreational time while my cousin is still at the bottom," said Jason Lopez, Marshall's cousin.

It would be too dangerous and crowded for divers to continue the search today, said Lt. Paul Chagolla of the Sheriff's Office.

The plane crashed into the south end of Lake Pleasant shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. Divers from the Sheriff's Office spent Friday night and all day Saturday combing the crash site.

The lake was still open to boating and visitors on Saturday, and divers recovered portions of the wreckage.

The pilot was talking on a cellphone to a friend in a boat below and asked the friend to shine a flashlight in the air to signal the boat's location, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Witnesses reported that the plane was flying about 10 feet above the water before the crash, Gregor said. FAA rules require airplanes to be at least 500 feet above any body of water if there are boats present.

Betty Jones was visiting the lake with her family Friday night when she heard a buzzing noise and then the sound of a crash.

"I thought something exploded," the Phoenix resident said.

The FAA had investigators reviewing the scene of the crash yesterday, and the National Transportation and Safety Board will also look into the incident, Gregor said.

The pilot rented the single-engine Diamond Star 40 from Southwest Flight Center in Scottsdale.

Company president Gary Lewin said the pilot was a regular customer and declined to comment further.

The pilot had an airline transport pilot rating, Gregor said. The license is the highest rating offered and allows those who have one to fly commercial airplanes.

Lopez said it was the first time his cousin had flown in a plane with Whitney. Marshall's father, Sam Marshall, said while the delay in the search is frustrating, he doesn't want his family's loss to be clouded by anger.

"I don't believe that Tim is gone," Sam said. "His body is in the lake, but he's with us in spirit. But I do hope we get some closure early on Monday."

Nice job on reporting the details.  Started off as a King Air and ends up as a small single engine plane.   :stupid

There were news crews, sheriffs, and dive boats all over the place yesterday.   :D

Here's the real facts.  He and a friend buzz the lake in a rented plane while on the cell phone with friends on a boat.  He tips a wing and stuffs it into the lake.

He is a very experienced pilot with a history of stunts including flying a plane through the fountain in Fountian Hills about 20 years ago.

His grandfather founded Pratt/Whitney Aviation, the engine builders, he's the Whitney side of it.

DPS did not put divers in the water to look for survivors as the first story says, DPS doesn't even have a dive team.  By the way, dive missions in Arizona are all recovery missions.

MCSO divers were in the water all day Saturday and we scanned a large area with surface sonar.  At the end of the day, we found one of the fuel tanks which should narrow our search tomorrow.  I fully expect to make recovery of both victims and the fuselage tomorrow or Tuesday.

Saturday's mission was dangerous, too much traffic and the weather and water conditions (surface) were not good and the decision to suspend the operation during the weekend was made by the dive coordinator (Good decision).  As far as the family members being pissed that we didn't dive today, sorry, but how would you feel if someone gets injured or killed recovering the body of someone that is already dead.  Recovery missions, especially at that depth in those conditions is inherently dangerous, the additional surface traffic increases that danger tenfold.

Visibility was about 20', sometimes down to 5'.  Temperatures in the area were around 45 at 100'.

We will resume the operation tomorrow and will deploy a side-scan sonar to help narrow the search area.  Again, I have high hopes that this operation will be successfully completed by the end of Tuesday.

MCSO has one of the best dive teams in the country.  My last recovery was successfully completed within 8 minutes after entering the water.  At 90 to 150 feet however, it takes time.  At 150 feet, for example, we only have 8 minutes of safe bottom time.  Reporters and distant family members who want to be critical need to strap on a tank and see what it's like down there, then do the interview.

Sorry about that last line, but I spent the day at work today trying to recover a bit.  My head is still full of lake water, I'm sore from swimming what seems like 20 miles at 100', the news vultures got out on peoples boats and drove right into the search area despite the dive flags and two safety boats warning them off, then some distant cousin comes along to get his 15 minutes of fame and wants us to close the lake, pull manpower from the other lakes that are busy as hell, and then dive 15 hours a day to recover A BODY!  Have some class and worry more about your family members that are still here, take care of them.  Stop making sensationalist statements just to get your name in the news.  This cousin probably hasn't even talked to the guy in ten years.

I still say it's the giant freshwater squid that lives in Pleasant that reached up and slapped the plane out of the sky.   :bebe

He's still hanging on to that ultimate fighter too!!!   :good

We were out Saturday and saw the patrol boats and dive boats and stayed far clear of the scene as it was clear what was going on.  In our brief time passing by it seems like half a dozen boats were heading right at/through the middle of the site.  Absolutely amazing.   :beat

Well, day 3 of the search has come to an end.  We've started a search pattern in the area and it's a slow process.  Phoenix PD is out there with us and brought their side scan sonar.  It's a slow process because the sonar is a stationary unit mounted on a tripod.  It is lowered to the bottom where it scans a 60 swath.  The area is read and any targets are marked.  We dive on any significant targets.  So far we have made 9 dives on targets, all of which have been something other than what we are looking for.  After each 60 foot scan, anchors are lifted, sonar is lifted, then we move it all to the next grid and start again.

We have also made several line searches in areas of interest, also with no luck, although I've found some cool stuff.  The visibility was terrible yesterday, less than 10 feet, and I had a near "air emergency", ending one of my dives with about 100 psi.  Those of you who dive probably know how long those safety stops can seem when you're almost out of air and due to the depth I was diving at, it was a 4 minute stop.  I had become separated from my partner due to the visibility issues so I had nobody to buddy breathe off of and I did not come up anywhere near the safety tanks we had hanging.  I can't wait until we get our new equipment this summer...pony bottles included.

Anyway, we'll be back out there tomorrow and probably Thursday, then the operation will be suspended once again for safety reasons during the weekend.

There are conflicting reports from witnesses at the scene as far as direction of travel, so the search area is huge (needle in a haystack) but I still have high hopes for success.

The depths are tough because of the temperatures, and as I mentioned above, air issues.  At that depth, we are only getting about ten minutes bottom time.  I did do a search pattern yesterday on and around the island, which as about 35-45 feet and it was nice because we were down for almost an hour.

I'll keep you guys posted, right now I'm exhausted.  I went through 5 tanks and it really wears you down.

I went through 5 tanks and it really wears you down.

talked to my oldest brother tonight. He says he knows of you through one of your work partners....I guess today was his day to go diving.

Recovery missions, especially at that depth in those conditions is inherently dangerous, the additional surface traffic increases that danger tenfold.

....

So dumbass pilot goes out and kills himself in an airplane...

Now, we've got guys like Freddog and CE's brother out there risking their lives to bring the dumbass back up to the surface.

I say if you find him Freddo, tie a big chain around his ass and anchor it to the bottom.  :pissed  I don't care who he was related to, he not only put everyone that was on the lake that evening at risk, now he's risking the lives of the public safety people charged with recovering him.
