Holiday relatively calm so far
By DAVID BELL Saturday, May 26, 2007 10:34 PM MST
The eye in the sky is making sure everyone stays safe.
The Lake Havasu City Police and Fire Combined Command vehicle was put into action this weekend and by all accounts has been a success at keeping visitors to the Bridgewater Channel safe.
“So far, this is a well behaved holiday crowd,†said Lt. Rich Sloma.
Sloma was manning the monitors in the command vehicle, watching for unlawful activity and escalating tempers. The vehicle has a pair of video cameras mounted on a mast that allows the police to see from the London Bridge to the south mouth of Channel.
It's also set-up to eventually be the nerve center of holiday policing.
“Once dispatch is up to full staffing levels, we will run dispatch for the Channel from the Command Post,†said Capt. Joe Fiumara.
The instant officers also get constant updates of the carbon monoxide monitoring levels in the Channel.
“When we see the high points, we contact the Fire Department to post the elevation,†Sloma said. “The monitoring of the CO levels is a huge benefit. It's rapid and accurate.â€
The CO level in the Channel didn't reach dangerous levels Saturday though the Channel was shut down for a short period of time. Police ordered the closure at 1:25 because there were so many boats coming in from Thompson Bay that Channel traffic came to a stop. The shutdown last just 23 minutes.
Looking at the monitors and the crowd in the Channel, Police Chief Dan Doyle commented, “It doesn't look like tourism has suffered.â€
Doyle's officers are enforcing a new ordinance that restricts certain behaviors that went into effect last year.
The Offensive Conduct in Public Places ordinance took effect last August and applies to all public places, not just the Channel and Lake Havasu. It gives officers greater flexibility by placing indecent exposure, public intoxication, violent acts and abusive or obscene language into a single city ordinance.
“Our officers
Through Saturday at 4 p.m., Lake Havasu City Police made about 140 arrests, primarily alcohol related. There were also a few arrests for possession of marijuana and people wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.
Lt. Randy Johnson with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office reported a very busy Saturday, with minor accidents and the number of calls for service up over previous Memorial Day weekends.
“There were no serious accidents (and) hopefully we won't have any,†said Johnson.
Johnson said his office hadn't yet compiled stats but said “arrests seem to be down a little bit. But it's as busy as it has ever been out there.â€
By 5 p.m. San Bernardino County had 11 arrests with all but eight for Boating Under the Influence. There was one drug arrest and two for parole violations.
“We'll be out again Sunday,†said SBCSO Sgt. Mike Fassari.
SBCSO responded to an injury accident at Copper Canyon early Saturday afternoon, when a man riding on the bow of a boat was injured as the boat hit a swell. The swell tossed the victim in the air and he slammed down on the boat injuring his back.
Lake Havasu City Fire Department personnel on the new fireboat transported the victim to Contact Point and transferred him to River Medical Ambulance for transport to Havasu Regional Medical Center.
The only major boating accident reported Saturday occurred on the Colorado River just north of Needles when a boat exploded. Ft. Mojave Tribal Police report no fatalities and said the injured were transported to Valley View Medical Center in Mohave Valley. Two people suffered serve burns as a result of the accident and their status was unknown as Today's News-Herald went to press.
Both Sheriff's Offices are being joined by camera crews filming a reality television series for Court TV called “Party Police.â€
â€The show is like a combination of ‘Cops' and ‘Girls Gone Wild,'†said Scott Hall with Baby Jake Media. “We were here for Spring Break and we'll be here throughout the summer, for the holidays.â€
