...if many on this board do any ocean boating (costal or island trips).

I think I've seen some posts from some about catalina. I've got my boat home in OC now and may not get back out to the river until Sep.  :rolleyes

But I just installed a fish finder, and will be working on a bow platform this weekend to do some fishing out of LB.
Also have a trip planed in Aug to head to Catalina for a night of camping.

Wonder if many others drop in the salt. So many like to keep their toys in fresh water.

I don't know what boat you own so it's hard to offer any specific advice....ever made the trip over to the island before?

I can say this, in general you'll want to keep close watch on the weather forecast, carry a radio and a GPS is handy to have but not 100% necessary.
You can easily make the crossing using a compass and dead reckoning on a clear day.

Early morning is your best bet. Smoother water makes for an enjoyable voyage.  :good

My 16 year old made the trip over on a sailboat with my wife and I (8 hours) when she was about a month old. If you are bringing kids, keep them hydrated. Wind and sun are always with you.

Have fun, good luck.  :D

Hey GlassMan

Thanks for that. Actually, I have made the trip to Catalina once before. I've got a 21' open bow and have VHF and GPS. And I only make the trip with other boats AND in good conditions. I also have taken a costal navigation course given by CG Aux.

I know this is a Havasu board, but I also enjoy some costal cruising, have gone from LB to Newport, and was just wondering if others in this board do as well.

I also like to drop into San Pedro Bay and watch the LB to CAT and back Ski race. I think that's coming up next month.

Sounds like you've covered all the bases! :good

Got a bow cover? Sure comes in handy.

That ski race is nuts! A buddy of mine used to do it until his wife made him quit. Didn't want to be a single Mom I suppose. :rolleyes

SALT ON MY BOAT, AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN.
FOR DAY TRIP I'D PASS. GOING IN A.M., OVER-NITE IT, AND RETURN A.M., SOUNDS LIKE LOTS OF FUN.
ALMOST ALWAYS BIG SWELLS TO SURF ON IN THE P.M.'S
BELIEVE ME, AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS, 4-6 FT SWELLS CAN RUIN THE DAY OUT.

That's a  :good on the bow cover.

Last year was the first time I saw the race. The first group went, which are the under 22' ??
I thought, that was cool. Then the BIG BOYS fired up.
:jawdrop
Deffinately an 'A' ticket.

Yup
Over in the AM, camp on beach or in boat, then back in the AM. It's the way to go. Isthmus is way cool.

We were going to Catalina this past weekend, but plans changed and we didn't go.  We make about 4-5 trips a year to Catalina and then a bunch of other trips from N.B to L.B and vice versa.

I'll let you know the next time we go.  :D

:laugh  I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep up with you.
It does get a little bouncy in my 21'r

I told the wife we need to keep this boat at the river and get a sport cruiser for home. Didn't go over real well.
:laugh

We used have some big get-togethers at the Isthmus and enjoy the Buffalo Milk over at Doug's Harbor Reef!

The west side of Two Harbors is great for softball :good

Have a great time!  :D
