What a great story and what great pictures. I remember taking trips like that back in the late 60's and early 70's with my parents, and it looks like nothing has changed in those 30 years. I have never taken 2 weeks off and taken my family on one of those adventures, but it looks like I may have to plan one. My most memorable vacation was never at the river, but a 14 day trek in a van with my parents thru Mt. Shasta, Bryce, Zion, Yellowstone, and some of the other one horse towns we stopped in.
Your adventure has brought back great memmories, and a possible vacation for next year!

The key to seeing America is to stay off of the Interstate. We took the 89 up as soon as we got into Utah. You can take it from AZ. If you take it from southern Arizona you hit either 5 or 6 national parks. Let me know if you go, so I can give you a few ideas for "must sees."

Haven't been there, yet I'm waiting for the Smithsonian to reopen.

Was just there LY...the Washington Monument refirb should be done. The Natural History Museum is all new as well. Take the walk along the pool to the Lincoln Monument.
Lots of history to see within walking distance of the White House. I think the hookers hang out on Beale St.
