Freeway bridge collapses into river during rush hour in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- A four-lane interstate bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles and tons of concrete crashing into the water.

Mark Lacroix photographed the bridge collapse from his apartment window.

The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m.

A tractor-trailer caught fire, and flame and black smoke billowed into the sky.

Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank.

There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue vehicles were there.

Divers were also in the water.

Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.

They said that they had no indication, but there was some construction taking place on and near it...........

seems so hard to believe it really happened.... :eek

Saw/listened to one interview on Foxnews of an engineer that thought many bridges in our country are not nearly as stable as they should be.

About 15 divers performed a bank-to-bank search this afternoon and found 11 vehicles, including an 18-wheeler. Vehicles with bodies inside are being taken out of the river, while empty ones are being marked and left in the water.

I feel so sorry for those who have been hit hard by this. :cry

I hope that the investigation doesn't reveal that substandard materials were used, but I would not be surprised. :confused

Very sad to see something like this happen. It was a preventable tragedy. When the last inspection was done and found the bridge to be inadequit, the repairs should have been done then. But thats playing the would of, could game....More important is the victims here. May God bless them all, and those that perished R.I.P..
