There's probably a FEW that can relate! Oh, I also got my trailer lights today. This is where I took a lesser resto approach. I was trying to find old style lights, but trying to make it legal was a problem while keeping the teak steps and eliminating that god awful "bumper" they welded on the trailer. I figured if I can't put old style lights on, I'll make it look like there' no lights at all! I'll be painting the trailer black again, so after some searching around, I found smoked lens LED's. In the daylight you'll be hardpressed to see them as the taillights will be recessed and look black. The sidemarkers also look black, but will be mounted on the sidestep brackets and the edge of the teak slats will just barely cover the top of them, "hiding" them. You'll only see them when the lights are on. There goes the resto part of it, but I think it'll work.

Spoke to the upholsterer yesterday and got the price for everything. Amazing how much cheaper it is to upholster something that ISN'T an open bow, need curved seating, and the old carpet's already out. He was concerned because he was charging me an extra $100 to edge bind all the carpet. He's doing something kinda trick for the seat back(s). Instead of having the front and rear seat backs seperate, he's making it a one piece drop in over the bulkhead. I'm not rushing them... won't be done until Xmas, so time to start getting the roadster ready for show season.

Pretty close, isn't it? The Stevens I found and turned a guy on Hotboat onto had the same flavor graphics as well.
I'm sure mine would ride smoother if it had all the "V" that the one in your pic had!

It's gel... the original from 1969! The price was right on it too.... FREE! It was sitting in a guys garage for 14 years with a blown (up) BBC and he was moving. Needed it moved in 10 days, so he wanted it GONE! I passed on it (not having seen it, just phone calls to the owner) because I was SURE WWIII would break out if the wife came home and saw a third boat in the driveway. After she saw the pic, she asked why I didn't get it As far as the towel bars on it, who knows... people have funny tastes. For the price, I could deal with it.....

Well, the boat's still at the upholsterer's, but I got something I've been waiting MONTHS for! Back in the old days (yeesh), trailer side steps werent all solid metal... many trailers used teakwood slats for steps. My trailer is one of those, so I wanted to be a little different and reproduce it. The teak is here, and I figured I'd give everyone a little sneak peek. This is 3/4" x 2" solid Brazilian teak flooring. It's a LOT cheaper to do it this way than try to find and rip teak stock. I'll just rip the tongue and groove off, and have a finished width just shy (actual) of 2". I ordered a shitload (is that a real unit of measure?) of stainless carriage bolts for a detailed look. With new chrome single axle fenders and teak steps, it'll be just like the 60s again.

Here's one of those cheesy photochops that show how it'll look. Hopefully it looks a whole lot better.

Well, went by the upholsterer's today to check the progress. There isn't any... hasn't even been touched yet. A boat that was in befoer me "needed more work than was expected" and pushed me back. I gave them a ration of shit and said "give me a date where I just pull my truck up and tow it home finished". The drop dead date is now 1/15/07.

Not yet, it's still at the upholsterer's shop looking ugly as ever. That's the problem... with it sitting over there, I can't do anything but polish stainless fasteners.

Another month has gone by, and I stopped by the upholsterer today to check out the progress. The original idea for making the the front and back seatbacks one piece didn't pan out, so it's back to the original style. Carpet's done as well as both bottom cushions, he just has the seatbacks and pump cover to finish. The color scheme looks the way I wanted, and having all the carpet edges bound gives it that "custom car" look. I can't tell you how much I hate the look of carpet that's just glued down and trimmed. Â A couple more days and she's ready to come home for the trailer work to commence.

It's home, but parts will be going back for minor work. I wanted more foam in the cushions to give a more rounded look, so I'll be pulling them out in a couple days. Here's what it looks like right now though. Trailer work is next (you can just see the teakwood peeking out in the bottom pic). Working over the gelcoat will be the last thing...

For this upcoming season I'm just colorsanding and buffing the original gel. I've spent enough money on this boat for a while... it's time for the monetary wounds to heal and get a little seat time. I doubt I could get the money I have in it back when I sell it (typical boat story), so before I spend more I want to start enjoying it.

And I thought I was hiding it so well. Yes it is. I guess I'm dong the same type of thing in rods that I do with boats.... Taking vintage and nostalgic to another level. Where else can you get a show polished set of vintage Mickey Thompson valve covers off the shelf? Or a complete set of vintage Sun gauges to install instead of Autometer wannabes? Oops... sorry for the spam, couldn't help myself
