One of the things that concerned me was that the turnbuckles for the cav plates probably hadn't been turned in 30 years, and didn't look like they WANTED to! I didn't mark which turnbuckles went where, and the lengths were different so I was screwed. With the excessive speeds it will be propelling me, I wanted to be able to trim the ride for top speed (<----- sarcasm). I finally got them all apart (no small feat), but NOW I have to figure out what a good starting point is..... 0, up or down. I have a few days to figure it out since I'll be TRYING to take it off the trailer on Saturday so I can replace the bunks, wire the lights, etc. Any ideas on the easiest ghetto way of putting the boat in the garage so I can work on the trailer in the driveway? I have a cherry picker and floor jack to work with. I was thinking about making a sling to go under the hull at the transom, lifting it just off the trailer, jack up the front with the floor jack enough to scoot the trailer out. Yes, no?

No way to suspend it in the garage, but I figured that as the trailer slides forward, I'll set the back of the hull on wheels to support it, lower the front back onto the trailer to reposition the jack. Jack up the front, slide the trailer again and repeat as necessary. I figured I might start at 0*, take it out and see if it porpoises or bow steers, adjust the plates and take it out again. I know it's going to take a while to set up since it's not "normal"

It worked exceptionally well. Had the trailer out from under in about 10 minutes. Managed to get the new bunks made (definitely makes an ugly trailer look better), got the cav plates bolted up and sealed (hopefully), and ran a new harness on the trailer. Doesn't sound like much for a days work, but I'm down to all the little stuff that doesn't really show. I'll seal the nozzle and plate today, and it'll be pretty much seaworthy. More buffing and then a TON of rechecking my work. The only thing I didn't repair/replace on this boat is the intake, so there's a LOT go over. I HATE breaking down!

Got the nozzle/transom sealed today as well as the other associated stuff. The steering is all together, and continued on the trailer wiring. Now if the stuff I ordered from Rex on Wednesday would actually GET here I could finish the exhaust! I'll be making a call tomorrow morning to make sure they shipped it. It really shouldn't take more than 2 days to go from La Verne to Anaheim. Probably wound up in

Well, it didn't wind up ANYWHERE, 'cuz they didn't ship! I called yesterday morning, and it was still sitting there waiting for SOMEONE to cut the hose to length. It was supposedly shipped yesterday, so I SURE hope I see a box on the porch from Rex when I get home tonight! On a better note... last night was the first time I really felt like I was in a finished boat. I vacuumed it out and hopped in the driver's seat. Turned the key, all the gauges moved, the elec fuel pump whirred, and hit the starter. It started and everything! (don't worry, the driveshaft won't be installed until everything is checked out) More little stuff to knock out tonight.....

This weekend.... I'll be finishing the buffing and pinstriping it. The lines between the 2 different gel colors doesn't have a finished look, and frankly, it bugs the crap out of me. Considering the condition of the gel, it wasn't worth having someone stripe it with paint, so I'm going with 1/8" striping tape. Picking the color took awhile. I wanted a color that would be period correct, but still compliment the kind of refined look the interior gives it (if you can call this thing refined). I wound up picking Competition Orange for the pinstripe. It gives it a neat old school look while complimenting the bronze and gold gels. Now the truly important part. I need to name it! I want to try to tie in a few key concepts, but have been drawing a blank. The "keywords" are: flatbottom, jet, gold, dinosaur, survivor, ill handling, rough riding. Ideas?

I haven't decided on a name yet.. I have a couple days left. OK, I lied.... I'll post a couple pics before Moabi. I finished colorsanding and buffing it today, and had enough time to pinstripe it. I'll polish it tomorrow and finish up the trailer. It came out better than I thought it would, but you can't call it new by any means. 5 days left 'till it gets wet....

Well, she's all done except I have to make new carb bowl vent tubes 'cuz I threw the old ones away when I milled the airhorn. She hits the water tomorrow, and I figured I dragged my ass enough, I needed to decide on a name. It's probably one of the more boring, and overused names of the 60s and 70s, but it's the most period correct and appropriate.... "Fools Gold" There's no time to cut them before I leave, but I'll order some old style prism tape and cut it from that. If that doesn't scream 60s/70s I don't know what does! One odd little note as this all wraps up. I've called this a '69, but since I had to turn in the title when I transferred it, I didn't have any original documentation to look at to verify it. The new reg shows it as a '65 and a history search shows it as a '65, so I've been wrong all this time. Hell, 4 years older than I thought, so the gelcoat held up better than I figured! Wish me luck tomorrow.

I love that boat! When I was redoing this one, I had that one in the back of my mind. Maybe the next boat'll look like that.
