Well since the Nordic is kicking my ass and nothing's going right, I figure I better take a break and do something else before I take a chainsaw and cut the focker up!.  So I decided to tear the 22R motor down, this thing had a milk shake in it when I got it, in fact it was pooring out the dipstick, I was told it was a head gasket. Well by the look of the gasket there was no trace of a water leak, but two of the head bolts were milky when I took them out WTF. So now I'll stick it all in my tank and clean it all up and see what's going on!..
I should have taken a pic when I drained the pan but this'll give you an idea what this thing looked like from top to bottom!..
This is grosse and all the bearings are wasted from running it that way. Haven't figured why that one cylinder got water in yet though!..
All the mains are wasted too, so now it's clean up time!..

Never heard of that and I don't buy it, the wife's truck is pushing 400,000 and it's still like the day we bought it new, this one has less than 200,000, just like anything else you have to take care of it!..  Â

No traces of water on either side of the head gasket and it was a new one. Don't know about cracks or warpage yet, gotta clean it all up first, it's soaking at this time and I'll be checking for that next!..

It is rough so maybe I'll just throw it up on the mill and clean it up and see what it looks like???.. Thanks for the tip on Bill's, is he reasonable on his prices??..

Art, I don't even know if the guy is still in buisness. His prices were reasonable. I do know that he moved his Mesa store because the last time I drove down Country Club I noticed that they were not there anymore. I'm thinking that his main machine shop was in Phx somewhere. I do remember that most of the parts were used except for new springs, seals and locks that was good enough for my exbroinlaws truck.

Just going by the piston picture, it looks like you could mill the shit out of that head if you had to.
It could even be you may have a pinhole in the cylinder wall.  |
Well I got busy yesterday and didn't get the block out of the tank, maybe I'll get it out today but I didn't see any trace of a crack or hole anywhere in any of the cylinders and since there was no antifreeze in it, any water was visible by a track of rust. I'm kinda leaning towards the head, it does look kinda thrashed!... I could mill the shit out of it but gotta be careful, the chain may end up too long and I don't know if they make a shorter chain for those, I'll have to look into that!..

Art, I've heard the same thing about milling the head. The guy at Bill's told me they take no more than .010 off the head because of that reason. They heat the heads and use a press to straighten them as close as possible then surface the head. I wondered if that would cause problems down the road but I guess it works. The one I put on is still A-OK.

Bill's is no longer in Mesa, but their Phoenix shop is still open.

they make shims you can use too,to make up for the milling. also check the timing cover for chain slapping the cover at the water jacket. this is a very common problem on 20 & 22R motors

Well I'm going to put a new chain on it just to be on the safe side, think I'll lay the head down without a gasket and put the chain on and see how loose it is, that'll give me an idea how much I can cut!.. Since the head is alumunum, heating it to straighten it out won't hurt it but I sure wouldn't do it with an iron head, I hope this one ain't crooked though, don't want to spend a bunch of money on this thing!..

So you can get shims for that huh, how does it work are they like another head gasket?  The first thing I looked for was a hole in the timing cover but it's a brand new one, when I took the pan off I found the old chain guides all in pieces laying in the pan and I figure the old chain kicked a hole in the cover, so that eliminated that idea!.. I think it's the head that's messed up, I'm going to pull the block out of the tank in a bit and see what it looks like and stick the head in and clean it up, maybe I'll find something!..

Well, got the block out of the tank and cleaned up and I can't see anything anywhere that indicates a leak, gotta be in the head!. Cylinders don't look too bad considering it had water in them, think I'll just bottle brush the cylinders and clean up the rings and throw it back together wtf, good enough for a yard dog motor!.. Now on to the head, tomorrow's project!..
