If I could weld aluminum maybe, but I don't have the time to mess with it, I'll just look for a decent core!..

Quote (GoFastRacer @ Sep. 06 2005,8:56 pm) | Here's the problem, notice the corrosion right where the sealing ring of the head gasket goes, that's where the water was going in, I was wondering why that piston looked kinda rusty!.. |
Well, that's probably the number one failure we see on those heads. Doesn't matter if they have 30k or 300k miles. I'm guessing the gunked-up headbolts were probably #2 and #4 on the exhaust side.
I know you don't want to invest too much $$$ in it, but you might call the dealer and price a new head for grins. Last time I had to P&A one I was surprised the price was so low. It was a couple years back, though.

Nope no parts runner and I'm keeping it, it won't go on the road I'm just using it to move my boats around the back yard into the shop, getting tired of using the floor jack, LOL... It's getting parted out to a shell and chassis, know anybody that needs body parts!..

Well that's from neglect of the cooling system there, shouldn't have corrosion like that regardless of what motor it is!..
Nope, it was the two center intake and exhaust and the rear intake side bolt that had the milkshake around them, and there was no trace of water going to the center head bolts, that puzzles me there?
This thing will never see the road again, it's just a yard dog to move boats around, a head from the dealer would cost more than the whole POS is worth!, LOL..

Actually I was wondering how long it would run dry with the aluminum head If it would run for 10 minutes without heating up who needs coolant!..

Art, what ya going to do with it? mill it? BTW what's the story with the shims? Â |
You'd have to take a .100 min off to barely clean it up and I haven't been able to find out about a shim, never heard of that I would think it would be just a thicker gasket, but I doubt that that anyone would have a .100 thicker gasket!..

No doubt that one was from cooling system neglect. We were changing those heads out under warranty for erosion like that right up to the last truck with a 22RE. Never could understand it as most were only a year or two old. The last one I remember doing had less than 30k miles and everything looked perfect except for the erosion next to #4 cylinder. Factory reps never had any believable answers and we(techs) all just attributed it to poor castings. It was never a huge problem, but just enough of them to stand out as odd.
Was going to price a head today just for fun, but got way to busy.
By the way, I've never heard of shims for those heads, but who knows what the aftermarket might have come up with. I do remember the old L-series Datsun 4 and 6 and the shims for the cam towers to compensate for milling of the head.

Ya know it don't matter what it is, it all boils down to plain ole routine "Maintenance" and for some reason people just don't get it. The wife's Toy is pushing 400,000 and it's still like the day we bought it, all the hoses are all original even!..
I've never heard of shims either, I'm trying to figure how it works To me I would think you would use a thicker head gasket, if there is such a thing for those??.. I can see shims for the cam towers on those L-Series but the 22R's don't have those, the cam sits right on the head and they don't even have cam bearings!..

Decided to do a little checking and sure enough, the aftermarket does have cylinder head shims. Here's a link to one of the companies.Innovative Machine I also found out that Fel-Pro has a listing for them also.

Hey thanks for the tip, I'll have to see how thick I can get one, think I'll just weld up those spots and throw it up on the mill and clean it up!..
