Quote (AZKC @ Oct. 14 2005,3:37 pm) | Boy that head was a mess |
Yeah it was, it looked like they never ran anti-freeze in it and it had a lot of corrosion, there was no way that it would seal. The worst part is the guy I got it from paid $900 to put a new head gasget and a tune up but they never fixed the head and it had a milkshake right away, that's when he got discusted with it and sold it cheap, I already got some of my money back on parts, still have some left for sale too!..

Thanks Wade, it should clean up real good, if anything it should work fine for a yard dog. I'll probably mill it Monday!..

Well the head is warped .006 but it straigntened out when I clamped it down!.
No wonder it didn't seal, from the highest spot to the lowest was .040. This is .010 from the lowest, one more cut(.005) should do it!..
Ok it's a done deal don't look bad at all, a few touch ups with the Du-More and it'll be ready to go!.. Â But first I have to make a V-Drive plate for a guy!..
Thanks again Wade!..

Quote (weldwade @ Oct. 18 2005,5:57 pm) | Cool Art, I had it clamped the best I could but I had to do it on my small welding table because the big one is outside. The small one was too thin so thats where the warpage came from. Im looking at a new place big enough to get all my shit in one place "inside". Hope the Yard Dog purrs like a Kitten |
Nahh, from the way the surface was way off I don't think you did it, I bet it was already warped but now that it's flat it should seal up good!..

the head turned out looking great, you talked about  shims, with that you should be good? |
Thanks, I didn't take that much off so if anything a shim should do it. Now I hope the block is straight!.. This next week I'll get the valves lapped in and put together!..

To answer both here, the tensioner is not spring loaded it works by oil pressure and it is just so long and not very long at that!. Now when you cut the head and if you have to deck the block now the head drops down and the chain is looser, it's the same thing as when you line bore a V8 and the crank moves up in the block, the timing chain will be loose and that's why they sell chains to componsate for this, don't know if the have those for the 22R though!.. But they do make shims for that, don't understand how that works yet but I'll probably find out soon enough though!..

I guess that was what I was thinking, there are too many of those around not to have a fix for every combination of head and block. yes a couple thou. on one end adds slack to the chain, and the tensioner can only take up so much.sounds like you are "ahead" of that.
It started as such a simple project

I used to know someone with this motor in his truck. It sure is a durable motor IMO. If he could have killed it, it would be dead.
P.S. Nice weld job!

Well my 86 that I bought brand new is pushing 400,000 and it's still purring like a kitten, of course I maintain it that could be a good reason why!. This yard dog had only 150,000 and it's wiped out, my neighbor's truck had less than 75,000 and it was all shot to hell!..Oh well!..
Yep Wade does "GOOD" work!..

Well finally got to spend some time on it, got the valves all lapped and they look pretty good, just have to get some valve seals and it's ready for assembly!..
Cleaned up the block crank rods and pistons what a pain!. Crank needs to be turned, bearings are all down to the copper, block needs to be bored!(damn why don't people take care of their shit! )You're going to love this!. Since this is nothing but a yard dog I ain't putting nothing but a gasket set in it!. Bottled brushed the cylinders and slapped it back together, cam ain't worth shit either but it's going back in anyhow, this should be interesting!..
