Well, my bro DIDN'T buy the boat this weekend, so it looks like your input has paid off. :good   Mark is highly competitive...so maybe the fact that he needed to do more research and shopping around finally sunk in so he doesn't end up getting screwed and looking like a moron (with me telling him, "I told you so!" of course  :D  ).

Anyhoo, he's looking at a few other boats now and emailed me this question today:

Quote
Another question for your boat friends. Do deck boats use a lot more gas than sport boats?  We are also looking at a chaparral Sunesta 216. Sport boats are chap 204 and 210.

Have I told you lately that I love you guys?  Thanks for putting up with me and my questions.   :kiss  :grouphug

Glad to hear he didn't buy it, that thing is a project probably why he was selling it!.. :rolleyes

Weeeelllll.....supposedly he was selling it because they are moving and will no longer be on a lake...but I kinda wonder if he was taking my bro for a ride.  Mark's certainly not stupid but he's also not exactly boat savvy, never having owned one.  He's a pretty tough negotiator though, so that will help him.

He probably won't be moving the boat without a trailer. Watch for that one to drop in price fast as his move date gets near. If it's still there when your brother sees them packing, that would be a good time to make an offer.

Yeah, with cash in hand!..

Good thinking!  I'll pass on all this info to him, but I have a feeling he wont' want to wait too long, they want a boat for the summer.  And I want him to have it by the time I get there! :laugh  :D

I talked to a friend from GA today and he said the Oconee is the only lake in GA not affected by the drought, so that's good news there.

Hmmm, I wonder if my bro would hire me to be the caretaker for his new place? :stupid  :stupid  ;)

I have a SeaRay 210 Sundeck with the 5.0ltr and a Alpha 1 Mercruiser drive. Running around and just cruising it does real good on fuel. There are times it potty's me off cause we didn't use the fuel I was wanting to use.  :D  Throw a tuber or a ski'r out there and of coarse the fuel usage will go up. It's all in what your doing and how you drive it.

Just my .05 worth and my experiance with my boat.  :good

My theory is. The bigger the hole(cylinder) the more you have to feed it.  :eek    :D

I'm baaaaack! :)

Just got this email from my bro...can anyone help?  Thanks again!

Can you quiz your boat guys on a 2005 Chaparral Sunesta 216 deck boat.  A couple Chaparral dealers told me the hull design was a bit too flat and the boats ride bumpy and the smallest Sunestas of the past couple years are considered to be somewhat unsucessful because of this and that it took a longer time to plane than other boats.  Not sure if this is dealers trying to push people to new boats or not.  We found one we like at a pretty good price but now I am a bit nervous.  We took it out and I wasnt focused on it but I seem to remember Debbie being worried about the kids popping out of the boat.  Figured it was just usual chop in the water but now I am not so sure.

As far as being slower to plain, that could be different things like H.P. or even the prop on it. As far as the ride, that would be completely subjective. Different water conditions on any given day will change any boat. This is definatly a case were he's gotta drive it to see if it's acceptable to him. On the lake where he'll be boating I'm guessing doesn't ever get to bad. I'f your worried about being thrown out of the boat, it probably wasn't to smooth a ride. That's also a natural response of many people new to boats.

Thanks Ken.  Hopefully he'll get another chance to take it out to see if it was the boat or conditions.  I don't know if Debbie's (my SIL) concern about the kids being thrown out is more related to the type of boat (deck vs other types they've looked at) or just a general concern, which wouldn't surprise me.  I think that's a fairly typical female response, as I was worried about it too without even seeing any of the boats.  Both kids are very comfortable around water and have been on boats yearly for a week in TN since they were babies....but I still worry.

He had better buy a boat Debbie likes too, or his days out might by limited.

The flatter the bottom is the rougher the ride will be in any condition other than smooth water, a V bottom cuts through the rough stuff and cushions the ride and saves on the kidneys!. :good

3 different dealers have brought this issue  up to him...do you think that leans more towards it being a design concern than just dealers trying to sell him a new boat?  The design has has been changed on these models now.

Well of course they'de like to sell him a new one, they get paid to do that. Thousands of different boats and designs all have certain and different issuses.

I agree, the flatter the bottom of the boat (less 'Vee' when you look at it from the rear) the more harsh the ride will be in rough water.  It will also plane-out quicker, and stay on plain at slower speeds (be better for tubing or wake boarding) with a flatter bottom.

Oh, and yes the dealers are trying to sell the new stuff, and that's the factory propoganda they give the dealers to do it with.

You need to pick the boat for how you intend to use it.  I would also look at the financing side of it, the new boat costs more, but could have lower payments due to better loan options......just my $.02

And the saga continues...just got a VM from my bro.  They decided against the smaller boat they were looking at...a good call I think.  Now they've added another one into the mix and he has a couple of engine questions...which is out of my realm completely.  I guess he's looking at one with 260hp 5.0 vs 300hp 5.7.  While both my brother and I can ski, I'm not sure my SIL ever has (although she's a terrific athlete so I'm sure she'll pick it up quickly).  I haven't skied in years, not since I tore up my leg on a less than spectacular wipeout in snowmelt at Donner. :rolleyes   So no one in the family is too skilled at this point, and the kids will be beginners.  I expect more tubing and wakeboarding than skiing, at least initially.  Would the 300hp be overkill in their case?  What's the difference in fuel economy given the uses I described?

He's also looking at wakeboard towers.  Given the same scenarios, do the towers make it easier to wakeboard, tube, ski, whatever than not having one?

I really think bro owes me a plane ticket so I can enjoy the dang boat once he gets it..I've got more than a vested interest now.  I should be billing him for my research time. :laugh

He's without an internet connection at the lake but I can call if we need clarification on anything. Thanks again for the help. :grouphug

I Would Take The 5.7 Over The 5.0, If I Had The Choice. Nothing Wrong With The 5.0 Though. The Towers Make It Easier To Wake Board, Or So I've Heard.
