When I drove for McDonnell Douglas we pulled the misile trailer from Long Beach Ca to Pueblo Co, the trailer itself was 108ft, 2 escorts all the way there and back, that was a FUN trip!..

Yeah, I'm stuck in a cabover because Arizona hasn't decided to get on board with the new length laws that Nevada, Utah and Idaho adopted. I could be legal at 115 ft. in those states, but I have to pass through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona on I-15. Arizona thinks 105 ft. is the max we could go through safely, but honestly you could pilot an aircraft carrier through there.
Right now we're waiting for Arizona D.O.T. to let us run a test truck through the gorge and once that's approved, then we have to wait for the Arizona Legislature. Â
I hope it's soon because my tractor's a '98 model with almost 800,000 miles on it and getting tired. It maybe ugly, but it's got a big horse (550 Detroit). Â
We just started using the Qualcomm last year. (Big brother is watching) Â
Man, a 108 ft. single trailer? Â Â Â You gotta have huge nads to haul that! Â

Ahh yes, the good ole scenic 30mi drive through the Gorge, what a pain in the ass!. We had a plant in Salt Lake, they made sub assemblies, we hauled 14 and 16ft wide loads back and forth from Long Beach!. We would take up the fixture(14ft wide) full of parts, then haul the unit back when it was done!. We had 4 states to travel through with different laws in each one. In the summer it was a piece of cake but in the winter time with the short hours it was a bitch. The first load would leave on Mon morning so we had to get into Utah Fri because you can run oversize loads on the weekends in Utah. We couldn't leave before 9 in the morning because of curfew so we had till 4:30 in the afternoon to get past port of entry on top of the hill, we always made it within minutes of getting a ticket! . We used to leave the load there and go back down the hill and stay at the Peppermil!. Man I was ready for a beer by then!.. Next morning we went into Salt Lake and kicked back for the weekend, with pay and perdiem of course!.

Actually, it's my choice because this run I do is easy, I only log 44 hours driving weekly, pays me a shitload of money and I rarely ever see management. Â
Best of all, since I've been hauling these turnpike doubles for the last 6 1/2 years, California isn't even on my map anymore. Â

Naw, that's nothing but rumor about Swift and it's usually them who start it.
Wal*Mart used to own Merit Trucking who delivered the dry grocery side of the Supercenters, but we sold Merit to Swift 2 years ago with a 2 year contract to continue. Anyhow, it didn't take them long to botch that up, so now they're on a very short term agreement. The plans are eventually for the Wal-Mart Fleet to take over dry groceries on top of regular store freight, but we just don't have enough qualified drivers or trucks just yet.
Swift, Knight, etc. and private owner operators are also used for store freight overflow that we can't handle and that's been going on for over 20 years.
Believe me, Wal-Mart will always own their own fleet because the suits at the home office love being in total control.

Yeah I know about Merit and that's normal for them to botch everything up the way they operate. But what about the Casa Grande center, that's all that's in there is Swift, and they are always looking for drivers to work out of that center!..

Buckeye is general store freight, but between you and me, I wouldn't want to work there. You'd make a good paycheck, but the transportation manager is a real company man and unless you have decent seniority, you can forget about a homelife. Half of the guys working out of there transferred in from Texas and California and have 10 years in minimum, so they have all the set bid runs snatched up. Everyone else does the horseshit and just when they think they can go home,......... there's just one more store load that has to go.

Quote (Bullitt Bob @ May 17 2004,9:21 am) | Oh, and one more thing.
Buckeye gets over a couple hundred applications per month and unless you keep sending in a fresh application and DMV report monthly, you'll be at the bottom of the pile forever. That's why you never heard back most likely. |
Nahh, it's the usual fkn bullshit, there's a line on the app that asks "Refered by", if you don't have a name, it goes into the round file!..
