Buckeye gets over a couple hundred applications per month and unless you keep sending in a fresh application and DMV report monthly, you'll be at the bottom of the pile forever. That's why you never heard back most likely. |
Nahh, it's the usual fkn bullshit, there's a line on the app that asks "Refered by", if you don't have a name, it goes into the round file!.. |
No sweat, just put down Bob Stewart, the doubles driver from Dispatch 6829, Hurricane, Utah referred you if you ever try again. Â
JimboLHC, a member on this board also drives for Wal-Mart out of Buckeye and lives in Havasu. He's planning on attending OP6CVII and you can hook up with him to get the straight dirt.

I worked for them 3 times and they fkd me 3 times and I found out why, they don't want experience drivers!. They operate on a rookie system for tax purposes. If a rookie dumps one in a ditch, he gets a brand new rig, if you're an experienced driver you had better have a cut and dry REASON not an excuse for dumping one or you may as well just keep right on going because won't have a job!.They get a tax write off because they aren't experienced. Also if you're experienced you're making too much money(remember AZ slave state) the rookie ain't making shit so he gets the good drop and hook runs and gets all the miles he wants..I used to get all the runs to downtown LA with a 53'tr where it was made for horse and buggy and have to sit for 4 hrs to get unloaded and then send me someplace and wait another 4 hrs to get loaded, there goes the whole day without pay!.. Meanwhile the rookie that still have to look at the shifter to see what gear he's in is kicking back with a big head racking up the miles!..That just ain't right, the rookie will never learn anything that way!. I can remember my rookie days when I had the white knuckels and sweating when it was freezing out trying to get in these places. I figure after 30yrs rowing the handle, I paid my dues and It's time for a kick back driving driving job!.Yeah right!..

That's the problem, Art. These big common carriers are always crying the blues about driver shortages, however they don't seem to want to keep but a very few around.
Things are changing though since the new Federal 14 hour rule went into effect in January. Once you start that log, your day is done 14 hours later, so these guys no longer can spend all day unloading at some chicken sh!t grocery warehouse and drive all night to make up for lost time.
Drivers are quitting the industry in droves and finally the companies are having to come up with long overdue pay increases to try and compensate. What sucks is the pay increase for lost time only puts the driver's net income back to what it was before the new law.
When I run late at night, ads for new drivers are in high gear on the Truckin' Bozo, Dave Nemo Show and Midnight Trucking Radio Network promising big pay raises and benefits. The funniest ad is for Swift, because now they raised their speed from 60 to 65 mph!
I was an owner-operator for 17 years and drove a gas tanker in San Diego for a year before falling into this job. Believe me, I know all about paying dues.

Yeah they piss and moan but when you tell them you're quitting, they don't even want to know why you're quitting, they say ok see ya!. The reason why they can't keep anybody is beause of those recruiters, they lie like hell they give you the answers you want to hear, they must get commission or bonus for everyone they hire!. Once you start and the dispatchers get a hold of ya, it's nothing at all like you were told when you got hired!..
Ya know I been wondering about the new hours, for some reason I don't see these warehouses changing their program to accomodate the drivers!..Even with compensation the driver is still losing!..
So Swift gave another mileage increase huh, whoop ty doo!. I guess it's better than when I worked for them though, it was 57 and that's if you were on the pedal, on the cruise it was 55. The funny part is those fkn dispatchers would still give you appointments that you coudn't make even if you could run 65 non stop,LOL...

Nope, you didn't read it wrong, Art. The minute you first drop down to line 3 or 4 to start your day, also starts the 14 hour clock. You can still log off duty, but it only stretches out your 11 hour driving shift. After 14 total hours for the day regardless, you have to shut it down for 10.
Let's say you took a layover at Rip Griffin's in Tonopah. You get up and drive 1 hour to Safeway in Tempe. You spend 3 hours waiting for a door and 8 hours unloading. That leaves you only 2 hours until you have to layover again.
Unless you work for a company like mine where you drop and hook every load, you ain't making money.

Ok, that's the way I read it, very hard to make money that way when you work stricktly mileage!. Then again it's a bitch to sit at a place all fkn day long and then have to drive all night!..
You have a drop and hook deal huh, but how many years did it take you get that deal though!..

That's very similliar to the aviation duty rules. No more than 14 hours on duty, with no more than 8 hours in the cockpit. No more than 120 hours total flight time a month.
That's pretty simplified, but you get the jist. Gotta love the feds.

As of March 4th, 2005, I'm retired. This was my work truck. Great truck too. I was able make the tightest turns due to rear wheel steering controlled by the driver (me).
