:guns  I've been looking at supercharger kits for my 99 3500 HD. It's a 454, 4L80E, 5.13 gear, 15,000 GVW, 10 lug 19.5 wheel work truck. It has my welding equipment and tools etc. mounted. Problem is this is my tow vehicle for the boat. I looked into rear gear's but the only thing available is 4.88 or 5.13 and going to the 4.88 wouldent be worth the cost to me. The engine is very underpowered, wants to pull hills in 2nd gear (THIS SUCKS).. Just wondering if anyone has installed a turbo or supercharger kit on the 7.4 Vortec and what thier thoughts, coments are on the subject. :)

A supercharger would be the way to go. You're looking at about $4,000 to do it right by also adding an intercooler, chip and free flowing exhaust.

Turbos are great, except they generate a shitload of heat under the hood and you'll need to do a lot of extra insulating around the soft parts.

Another option to look at is an overdrive/underdrive unit made by Gear Vendors that mounts where the trans tail shaft is. If you have a 5 speed, it essentially makes it a 10 speed. 4 speed automatic becomes an 8 speed and so on. I'm considering one of these for my motorhome. :good

I have an old GV OD from a turbo400, found that it was unreliable. The new ones might be better but if im going to spend 4-5K on something Id rather make more ponies. Whipple got a nice setup and Banks does also. The only blower exp I have is with drag cars so going with a bolt on all inclusive kit is what Im looking for.

http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/product.asp?ProdID=1143                                                                     :good  here is the whipple setup, I talked to the tech guys and asked why no charge air cooler? they claim that thier blower runs 50% coller than anyone else and it is not needed with thier setup. the other thing I like is there is no mods to stock parts to make it fit but it does not come with a new exhaust system so it would be the most $$$$. when I bought the truck it felt like it had allot of power but after adding all my s@!* on the back im at nearly 20,000#. Prob think im crazy but the trucks almost paid off only 80K mi on it and I need a new house not a new truck payment...

After driving that thing, I don't think it's got 5.13 gears in it.  I would say 4.56's if anything.

I was running 60 mph right at 3000 rpm, and that's the same as my dad's motor home with 4.56's and the 19.5" wheel and tire combo.

:stupid tag behind the seet says 5.13, need to put rear pads and fix the leak on the hub covers. Ill pull the rear cover and count the teath on the R/P. I was wrong GM ratios are 4.63 or 5.13!! On long hills it pulls in 2nd gear very easily @3000-3500 barely stepping on the gas, you can make it shift into third but it wont stay there for more than 15-20 sec. now I can go to a lower numeric faster gear and be happy in 2nd gear(if I can find someone who makes them) cheepest fix. this will let me use the torque I have. put a blower on it so it will pull in third or the GV so I can split. I agree with everyone the GV seems like the obvious choice but Its not cheeper than a blower setup. Im sure the new GV is more reliable than thier older models but my question is doller for dollar where is it best spent???

I've got a '92 dually 454 with the whipple 110,00 miles. installed it at about 600 miles and have had no trouble. It idles in 110' temps. And has been very trouble free. twin screw heats the air less and reduces the need to cool the charge in street cars. mine runs at about 8 lbs boost wot. smog legal and dependable. other mods you need to look at are headers and a less restrictive muffler. I had a problem with exhaust leaks under heavy boost. I ran edelbrock headers and a flowmaster and left the rest of the exhaust, mine was 3"tubing

Yep I still have one of those somwhere on the shelf with a rebuild kit!..They're good for a half ton pickup, wouldn't use it on a motorhome, I'd get one of the newer big ones!.. :good

BTW, Paxton is a good setup too the Novi is a good unit, never messed with those though!. :good

got under it this morning, im thinking that it probably broke before i bought it because the black paint on the front side is not chipped off as the springs, frame hangers etc. the silicone on the rear cover has paint on it also but the kicker is the tag on the top left bolt 8/02 4.63. never saw it before because of the aux gas tank so i got under there this morning with my mirror and there it was!!! GM only offers the 5.13,4.63 gearsets but its a dana rearend so im sure there is someone whose got gears for it. ordered the pads(non stock) from Mearles today so tomorrow ill measure the ring gear to see if it uses the dana 80 gearsets. with the blower kits i will have to upgrade the exhaust, needs it anyway, so im going to start with that. ceramic coated headers, mufflers and mabye different cats.

The whipple is self contained and has no other tubing or hoses and seems to have less parts associated with it. The only other upgrade I did was to have a larger radiator made, it never overheated but more cooling slowed the fan from running as much. I also own a 2000 excursion with the power pack and a 6 gun speed loader, and the dually w/ 100k can still take it from light to light. but for towing you can't beat the diesel.
