A friend of mine (Bill) has an auto repair shop and towing service in Tucson, he towed a broken down truck and trailer in to his shop early this week and repaired the truck. The guy needed another truck fixed so Bill told him he would deliver the truck, trailer and pick up the other truck because he needed to head in that direction anyways. Bill was driving on the frontage road heading to Maranna when a DPS offer on the freeway spotted him, the cop exited the freeway and pulled him over. The truck was an F350 with a tandem axle dump trailer and neither of the vehicles had mud flaps on them. The officer wrote him two citations $250.00 ea for the truck and trailer. AZ law states that all trucks 1 ton and larger or any vehicle with modifications that lift the truck in any way must have mud flaps no more than 12" rear of the tire and no more than 8" from the ground and must adequately cover the entire tire tread area. Trailers must also follow the same rule if they have more than one axle.
AZ law enforcement is cracking down on mud flap violators :beat  just wanted to let everyone know. :(

A. A person shall not operate a truck, trailer, semitrailer or bus on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with rear fender splash guards that comply with the specifications provided in this section.

B. The splash guards:

1. Shall be attached in a manner that prevents the splashing of mud or water on the windshield of other motor vehicles.

2. Shall extend to a length of not more than eight inches from the ground.

3. Shall be wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected.

4. Shall be installed close enough to the tread surface of the tire or wheel to control the side throw of the bulk of the thrown road surface material.

5. May be constructed of a flexible rubberized material.

6. Shall be attached in a manner that, regardless of movement either in the splash guards or the vehicle, the splash guards retain their general parallel relationship to the tread surface of the tire or wheel under all ordinary operating conditions.

C. This section does not apply to:

1. A vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck with a manufacturer's rating of three-quarter ton or less, except that this section applies if the pickup truck has been modified from the original bumper height design to raise the center of gravity of the pickup truck.

2. A truck tractor or converter dolly when used in combination with another vehicle.

3. A single axle trailer with fenders wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected and that extend to a length of not more than fourteen inches from the ground.

I suppose I could just rivet a couple of black rubber extensions on the fender if need be.

From what I read if it is a tandem axle or more it has to have mud flaps. :angry I think I am going to use diamond plate aluminum to try and make it look a little better :guns

The thing that really pisses me off are those moronic low riders with their focking tires sticking 8" out from the wheel well. How many wheel bearings have these dumb a$$es ruined because they think it's cool, focking unsafe if you ask me. :angry  :guns

I always thought that was illegal. Thought it had to be covered by a wheel well or flare. :stupid

on the 4 wheelers it is...so on the low riders it is.

Right????? :angry

More than one tread sticking out of the fender needs a flare or cover.

That's a law in CA. , But I don't know about here. As far as your boat trailers ar concerned, I wouldn't worry about it unless the fender is gone or you have lifted it....  :D

Arizona DPS gave me a fix-it ticket about 4 years ago in the Virgin River Gorge for no mud flaps on my Bronco even though I have Nevada tags. :confused  My next door neighbor is a Nevada Highway Patrolman and just signed it off for me. He thinks they are a bunch of stooges. :stupid

That law has been in effect since the mid-80s.  Most agencies never write it, DPS excluded, but might use it as PC for a stop on the vehicle.  I have never heard of anyone even getting stopped for no mudflaps on a boat trailer.

I think that law applies in just about any state!. And if boat trailers required them, the MFG's would have to put them on!..

Well I agree that the MFG's should have to put them on because it is a requirement, and when you go to court you wont be able to use that as an excuse because it is your responsibly to know and understand the law. I had to go to Watson Chevrolet Friday and there was at least 8 trucks there that were 1 Ton's and none of them had mud flaps on them. I asked one of the salesmen about it and he told me he had never heard of that law. Mud flaps look stupid on trucks with regular pickup beds and I’m sure their sales would go down if they started installing them, there might have been a good reason to pass the law but IMO my truck and trailers don’t need them but I don’t want to get a ticket so there going to get put on. :angry

The funny thing is I used to have some short flaps on the van to keep the stones, etc. down while trailering. I took them off when I put on some urethane wheel arches.

My buddy uses a wides skirt - looks like a broom - when he's towing long distance. Helps keep crap from kicking up and hitting the boat. :cool

SUV do get around this law cause they are not trucks. I had a big Blazer back in the day and the title read Station Wagon and I beat a ticket because of that.

Now that I think of it, a van is actually a "bus".
A very short bus.
