I was wondering if anyone has purchased a boat in Arizona to avoid california taxes and were caught later and charged the taxes anyways.  I have a lender telling me that california will tax me at the end of the year.  Is this true?  The boat will still be regiserd in AZ and will be stored there.  Please let me know what you have heard or think.

Thanks,

Andrew

As far as I know it's perfectly legal to register the boat in AZ IF you use it 50% or more of the time in AZ waters or joint waterways such as the Colorado River. That was confirmed by a CA park Ranger up in Sacramento when he stopped me on the delta.

I have had my boat registered in AZ for 4 years. I did, however, have to register the trailer in CA because it is registered to a CA residence and used on CA roads. That was courtesy of the CHP who left a notice on my parked rig in the Needles Marina. Then I got a letter from the DMV.

Depending on the value of the boat, the Non-Resident AZ registration is usually cheaper. Even with the newly raised rates.  :D
