Couldn't hurt... :good   You can always send it back... :comp

As I understand it, when you use an extender on a wireless signal, it does dampen the performance...20mb download might drop to 12-15mb, still better than NADA... :beat

Is the shop wired overhead or underground?  To bad you didn't drop some Cat-5 in the plans...500' of Cat-5 is around $30 as well...

I've got three WAPs at the boat shop...showroom, production, and a repeater in service, and all are "open"...signals are good to maybe 200' at most.  Unless you spend big bucks, like using microwave dishes and such.  A repeater with a hardwire port is perfect.

My kid loves his on-line games, but his tower is upstairs and the farthest room away from the router.

I went redneck, running 100' of cable under the eves and over the patio cover... :laugh

Yeah, I think I'll try one and see what happens. Main wiring from the pole comes in underground, I should have laid some Cat-5 but with all the hassle and sh!t going on at the time I totally forgot about it until it was too late, now I'd have to go overhead and I don't really want to do that. It works ok for the most part, just when you have the radio on it buffers every now and then, thought maybe a little boost might help.. :rolleyes

All my crap is freebie crap from when I worked at Insight. As they refreshed PC's I was able to pic up what was going out the door. I don't do any gaming or any grafix stuff.  I'm looking to possibly build a box to run windows 7. Where my delema is what to use for a mobo. I'm thinking just to stay up with the times some what, going with a quad core cpu. But not sure whats good, Want to run at least 4 gig ram, may bump to 6 for giggles. What directions should I start looking at mainly for mobo and a cpu? Haven't looked at cases, but I would like to have something I can put multiple hard drives in.

Just kind of tossing it out there. Still in the stage if I want to just buy a ready made box or have a little fun doing it myself that I will know what's in it. I also may build 2 while I'm at it.

You don't want that store bought crap build your own, as far as hardware goes it's a matter of preference and what you want to do with it, for a MOBO I've had the best luck with MSI and ASUS, also if you're into overclocking ASUS have a button for instant overclocking no need to manually do it in setup, for CPU I've always liked AMD, memory I've had good luck with different ones been using Crucial for quite a while but I decided to try G-Skill with heat sink in my clear case and been happy with it, I would go with 16 gig though, I tried 4 and 8 and there's a big difference when you jump to 16 well worth the extra, in fact I'm thinking of jumping up to 32 gig. For Video cards I like Radeon I've got 2 6850 SLI's in mine, you can hook up 4 monitors if you want. There's a million cases just have to pick one you like, I see nice ones for $35 as well as $75??, main thing is don't cheap out on the power supply. But this is what's been working trouble free for me, lot of other stuff out there that works just as good too.

I usually get my junk from here, they have some real good sales and the best thing is the customer service.

Building the Box...that IS the question.

There's a guy ( C-2 ) on RDP that's got some good ideas...buy an old / refurbished Dell Server box...can be had for cheap ($200-$300).

He's take is the i5 is plenty of horses.  Gobs of room for ram (prolly get one with 8g easily) and SATA's...maybe buy a SS drive for booting.  I'm still a supporter of smaller HD's <400g...build a RAID w/redundant backup, etc.

Sure have come a long way since my first Commodore 64... :laugh

Yep, there's a million ways to go just brain strain. :laugh Next one I build I'm gonna build a desk and use it for the case and maybe do water cooling, there's some cool stuff out there. More I keep reading about SSD's the more I don't want them, RAID still seems like the way to go. :good

Oh,and just think how far they've come since the old 586. :laugh

Thanks Guys!!! Good info there.  :good   This will be a project over the next several months. I'm leaning toward building my own so I get what I want and know what I have. Plus it's been awhile.  :D  I have Win 7 Premium, only thing it's 32bit. So along with building a box, I will be getting operating system as well. 64bit seems to be the way to go. I have win8 on my laptop. Still not sold on it. For what I do with the laptop it 's fine for now.

Def Win 7 Pro...not a bad idea to visit a local PC shop and have them do it for ya... :good

Nice thing about that, you can always go back to them and swap-out/upgrade stuff...

Home versions are never stable enough. Been reading about Win 9 and looks like MCST is skipping it and going straight to 10, the beta is available for download now thought about trying it. :good

Actually I have Win 7 Ultimate. But like I said it's 32bit. Over the next few weeks I will be looking at everything to do this. First step is to find a case and a healthy power supply. Then decide what mobo and it's components. Drives will be easy compared to the rest.  :laugh  :D

I have both and you can really see the difference between 32 and 64bit, you'll definitely like 64 better. :good Cases, there's only a couple to choose from.. :laugh  :rotflmao  :laugh I like the Corsair modular Power supply because you don't have to have that spaghetti pile of cables just plug the ones you need, my last one wasn't modular and I removed a sh!t load of wire when I sleeved it and of course I had to open it up and naturally that voids the warranty on it.  :beat

Beta...gonna hafta go get it... :good

You can get a Dell 755 64-bit case for cheap if you shop around...I've got a 780 in the garage and it's pretty peppy w/4g ram...

Nice thing about Win8+ is it addressed all the ram you can throw at it... :beer

I finally took down the old HP Proline server box at the shop... :break  It's a beast...2 power supplies, 8 drive bays, tape b/u, etc.  big, heavy sucker...  :eek

At one time it ran Novell and supported some 20 users, phone system, etc.  Now it's just got Win Server 2003 on a 80g HD... :laugh

It might be a candidate... :confused
